Am installing dual battery in a mits challenger and the 2nd battery tray will only take a 250mm long battery. My main battery tray will take a N70 size battery. Currently my starting battery is a smaller exide battery which will fit in the 2nd batt tray. Can I put it in the 2nd tray and keep it as the starting battery and put my auxiliary in the main tray, that way allowing a bigger auxiliary? Well I am sure it is possible but is it just a matter of connecting the starter motor solenoid and alternator to the start battery or does some of that other wiring on the positive terminal need to be connected to the starting battery? Or should I just attempt to get the existing start battery terminals to the 2nd batt tray?

Am not that great on electrics so forgive my ignorance, thanks for any help.

Hi Cookie

It can be done and is a good idea.

You must however move all the starting battery cables over as the ignition, fuse box and other electrics need to be on the new starting battery. You must start off with a free and open bay for the aux with no wires connected to it.

Regards

Derek.

Thanks, exactly what I wanted to know. Incidently I purchased redarc isolator and cabling from you last year and am just getting around to installing it. Ready for the Pilbara camping season.

Well I managed to do it. Was a bit of a mission, had to separate some wiring from the loom, remove some clips, extend one wire, and manipulate the cables around, but I now have the starting battery in the 2nd tray with the all original cables running to it. Quite happy with the result, now means I can put a much larger aux batt in the original tray.

Now the big question of which type of battery? Been doing lots of reading and think it will be about a 100ah AGM, will just depend what I can source here in the karratha. I imagine postage costs would blow out purchasing from elsewhere.

Incidently not that impressed with the opposite lock battery tray, given it was for an MK triton but it did say also suits mits challenger, had to do some cutting and filing to make it fit properly. The plastic clamp is less than adequate for my liking as well.
