Terrano II Tyres

Hi,

I have tried to do a search, but it brough tup to many posts to go through and I have limited time to read. So I apologise if I am asking an old question.

I am about to purchase a Terrano II 99 model. I was just wondering how large I can go tyre size without losing to much power or gearing, and without rubbing etc.......I plan on getting a lift in the rear and then winding up front bars. Will I be able to fit larger tyres than standard before the lift, or will I need the lift? I was hoping to get to fit. I believe they run 235/70/15's (30 inch?) standard. Am I dreaming about the 32's?

By the way, I love the car it is fantastic to drive and any other info anyone has on them would be appreciated.

I run 30x9.5 R15's. The speedo with the standard tyres is out, but with 30" tyres, it is spot on.
Yoou would probably get away with 31's, but 32" would probably rub at full lock.

I don’t know if the lift will be enough as the tyres will probably scrub on full lock and may also scrub if the rear is at full articulation. Probably the best way would be to find an understanding mate that would let you borrow some wheels and try them. They have the same offset as Jackeroos and the older Pajeros if that is any help.

I've got a T II, and looked into this issue a few months ago. I fitted a 32 inch 10.5 old tyre onto the 15 inch rim. It would've probably cleared the front low edge of the mudguard, as the tyre moves inwards, if I had removed the plastic mudflap and sledgehammered the mudguard itself a bit, using brute force.

Mine has more than stock wheel travel built into the back suspension, and the 32 was just a few millimetres shy of the bodywork on full lock up: that was without releasing the swaybar disconnectors.

But that's how it was in my case anyway. Power loss even with 31's is quite noticeable, and for slow work it idles along a bit too fast in first low for my liking.

A good test to measure this is to drive in first high slightly uphill at around 2500 rpm, then quickly lifting your foot off the accelerator and let it slow down to idle speed (around 750) and keep going in first never touching the clutch or the accelerator. If it ever hesitates to collect itself in the process, your torque is way down due to running tyres that are too tall
