Hi,

I'm travelling the kimberleys for two months later this year and am trying to find out how much a GU Patrol (2001) can carry on its roof and how this affects a roof top tent.

I'm about 90kg, and my fiance is about 70, and the roof top tent is something like 40 or 50kg, so thats pushing 200kg.

From my research, the Patrol could only take 200kg, which was then downgraded to 100kg?

Am I correct or is there something I'm not aware of?!

Thanks in advance,

Jason.

It was in the manual of my 2000 model and the stated maximum was 150kilos. Now I'm sure that only applies when you are travelling, so you should be safe to sleep in it. It shouldn't flip over with your weight. Bit like a turtle on it's back EH LOL

Hi Jason,
I'd suggest that a static weight of 200kg when the vehicle is stationary is not going to be a problem. Heavy weight combined with rough roads would be an issue.
That said, I've had no probs carrying significant weight on the roof on my Series I GU on Kimberly roads, but my roof rack does have full-length bars in the gutters to spread the weight.

Gday Jason

We have a home made rooftop tent that probably pushes 70 kg, I'm pushing 105 kg and my wife is about 65. our 2 kids added up to about 20 kilo last time we were out, and we all end up up there sometimes. Its on 3 rola roof bars and we have had no trouble at all.

Look us up when you get here if you like, 0404 450 819

thanks for the replies everyone. I'm glad to hear that you're all agreeing with what I thought that it would be static (the only thing on the roof will be the tent when driving, so lets call it a maximum of 70kg with a roof rack, although we're going the rola-rack option, so probably a bit lighter) and ~200kg should be fine.

Andrew, will definately give you a call while we're up that way. We're leaving Perth on 16 July and should be your way early to mid August :)

Thanks again,

Jason.
