G'day, Picked up the 'new project' yesterday so now I can start making it ready for more outback travel. We sold our Jayco Dove Outback and bought this Jayco Eagle(see my pictures). There are a few improvements to make and the one I am wondering about is when I raise it (approx 65mm) do i need an engineers certificate for rego purposes.
We are now living in NSW, I'm wondering about regulations? Any help in this regard would be appreciated

if you know the right people, you can trace people and find their addys.. then if its the wrong person who finds this bleep out, they can come take your bleep .

also if you are doing norty things, or have illegal mods on ya truck, then RTA etc can hunt you down...

cops did to some bloke on the Skyline forum, even made page 4!

Hi Andy,
My turn to answer a question with a question.
What sort of bike is that in your rig photos?

Marty.

G'day MartyB, Yeah! Richard picked it, it's a 1981 CX500 with a few improvements:-
XR350 front end, Husky rear top frame, Handel bars & bark-busters, foot pegs XR, complete overhaul of the motor, pistons, rings all gaskets, new clutch... the list goes on.
I intend to use it for desert travel but I have to get a bit fitter first. The bike handles ok but it is a bit heavy in the front, the front end is the second and better set up, my first attempt was to use a front end assembly of an old CR400 Husky but I kept blowing fork seals!

Hi Andy

If its not independent suspension, you could put the axle under the springs.

Was there a reason, why you didn't get this done through the dealer you bought it from

Cheers Steve.

G'day Steve, Yeah its worth considering to put the axle under but it is not quite enough, you see the rear door jam is made in such a way that it acts also as a rear step and hangs down about 150 thus cutting ground clearance. I was going to use a 65mm U channel about a metre long and weld it under the suspension mounts on both sides(leaf springs). As for the dealer, I bought it second hand, it's a 2001 model

Yeah! Steve, It has 14" wheels at the moment I'm going to put 15" rims and taller tyres, I'm still not convinced about the axle under the suspension. I did that on my 6x4 trailer and worked a treat but the places and roads we travel on when away....do you think that will work with the van and the weight ?

It will only cost you a couple of hours to find out, if it doesn't work well you have to pull it all off any way.

If you have to weld something under your chasis I would use 50mm x 50mm x 6mm box.

That's what I used when I strengthened my trailer.

Cheers Steve.

Gday Andy. We have a 2001 outback Dove that was a bit low for my liking as well.
Solution was a spring reset at an extra inch higher, with an extra spring put in as well to give it a better ride when loaded.
I put Patrol rims on it with 265/75 r16 tyres and i reckon it behaves behind the Patrol alot better than before.
So look at the springs first,,they may just need a "birthday" :):).
