Seeking advice, My 1999 Hilux 3.0L deisel 4x4 ute had a noise from what sounded like the air con compressor or alternator. After seeking advice from RACQ 75 km away they advised try cutting the belt to the air con - No good noise still there so decided to drive back to civilisation slowly as motor appeared to be running fine (rebuilt only 7 months earlier) After about 180km i pulled over to rest and check engine i notice my ute had a major oil leak on the public holiday of course - 200Km from home of course. Luckily i checked the oil supply still full so it must have only just happened (Luckily for me) Anyhow the RACQ guys towed it away. Later advised that it was the alternator and that new one was around $730. Turned out that it was the oil pump attached to the alternator that was the problem. (Didnt know it had one attached) What does it do?
QUESTIONS: I was wondering about what sort of cost i should I expect to replace or fix the pump? Should i have to pay the $730 for the new alternator that they misdiagonsed? PLEASE ADVISE

On the rear of your alternator you have a vacuum pump which provides extra vacuum and is fed with oil from the engine into the rear of the vacuum pump which goes back into the engine . The circulation of the oil by the vanes on the vacuum pump create vacuum in the upper interior of the pump housing and the vacuum check valve . The check valve located on the vacuum pump outlet , ensures that the vacuum servo unti retains vacuum when the engine has stopped until the footbrake is applied .

This separates from the alternator and should be only the part that most likely needs replacing . Wouldnt have a clue what it would cost , but not as much as what you think . I wouldn't think you would need a new alternator unless that was playing up also .

Further to this if it is the 3 litre diesel they have the vacuum pump on the front of the engine I think , but as far as I know they are still detachable from the alternator and with the earlier models that have the pump on the rear , I have only ever had to replace the vanes and seals , guess I was lucky :)

Thanks for that. They have sent the alternator back so that wont cost me, but not sure the cost of the pump. Mine is on the front i think. Cheers

it is not an oil pump but a vacumm pump to run the brake booster primarily, they are exy . the spline is more than likely stripped, most auto elecs will tell you you need a new alternator, but it can be fixed, you can get a new shaft, or if you know a good engineer the shaft can be resplined. before you shell out 700 plus, do the legwork and you will save.

Just had the same happen on my 91 hilux (2.8 diesel - has the pump at the back of the alternator).

Mine was caused by the alternator dropping a bearing and siezing. Snapped both belts (which also drive the water pump) and I thankfully managed to stop the motor before meltdown. Before the oil leak mine was making a high pitched whine that kept in time with the revs.

Anyway, like you had to be towed home and managed to get an auto-elec to check it out on Easter Saturday. He stripped the alternator and vacuum pump, reconditioned the alternator, replaced the seal between the pump and the alternator and all is good again. Cost $325 (he qouted me $900 for a new alternator)

Hope yours is fixed soon...
