Am looking at doing the trip from Cairns across to Darwin in the middle of next year. I have a Patrol with an off road camper trailer, but other couple have a Patrol with a on road caravan. After some information in regards to what part of the trip would not be accessible for the on road caravan. Also interested in what sites/attractions other people found interesting. Happy travelling to all

Stoker,
Having travelled that road a few times I would say it all depends on the conditions at the time as this can change very rapidly due to weather.Even if conditions are good Iwould not take an on road caravan between Chillagoe and Karumba. From Karumba on you would be o.k. if going very steady with the right conditions, which as Ihave said can change very quickly as to time of year.Hope this helps.

Great trip, it's just a pity with the van you won't be able to do the road from B'loola to Roper. Make sure you go to Undarra Lava Tubes, you may get the van in to Lawn Hill if you drive real slow. As said above all depends on the roads at the time.
Have fun.

Get a good quality map, like Hema, it'll show all the sealed and unsealed roads and for the sake of the on-roader stay on the sealed roads. You'll have a ball. There are a few river crossings, but if you head across between June - Aug they shouldn't pose any prob's, check here before you go and stay updated locally on the track. You'll have to miss some stuff, but what you ain't ever had you never miss. It's still a great trip on the sealed section. There are other options too, like in Kakadu you can leave the vans at the ranger station before heading on the rough track to Twin Falls.
Have a great trip. We did it 2 years ago. Next it's Sydney - Derby via GRR in June. Can't wait.

Normanton to Burketown to Borroloola to Roper Bar wouldn't do an On Road van any good. From Borroloola you can go bitumen via Carpentaria Highway to Daly Waters.

Cheers

The problems you will incounter are the river crossings like the Calvert, large rocks, but I have seen an on road van come across,2003, probably had no water tanks left in it, but I would not like to try it. The Borroloola-Roper road is probably as bad.
Cheers Bruce.

Bruce & others,
I was planning to travel from Roper to Boroloola and on to Kingfisher Camp via Limmen River National Park, Lorella Springs and Cape Crawford in early July. I will be towing a 16' Phoenix Scorpion full off road van. Do you think I will encounter any problems eg. what are the river crossing depths likely to be at that time of the year?
Cheers,
Al-one
