My wife and I are about to purchase a Patrol 3l turbo diesel and join the annual migration north. Can someone please explain what the difference is between the GUII, GUIII and GUIV? I have tried to find the answers through the internet but with no success!

As a fairly regular visitor to this excellent forum, could I suggest that people use the spellchecker before they publish. I have enough trouble working out what people mean without battling the bad spelling!

Keep up the good works everyone!

I agree with you regard to spelling, but you must understand that in most schools these days the emphasis is on 'expression of ones self' i.e. the child should be able to express themselves in (spoken) conversation. A spell checker is no good unless the user actually knows the correct spelling of a word i.e. they are sufficiently informed as to be able to make THE CORRECT CHOICE. Guess that's why we are constantly hearing things like 'these ones' or 'yeah no' or 'no yeah'. Believe it or not but there are many in the community who preach that grammar is no longer relevant - yep you guessed it - so long as you can express yourself. Beats me, what's happened in the education system?

Can I suggest that you do an archive search on here on say "Nissan 3.0 litre" or a couple of variants of that.

Then make sure you have several days to spend on reading the various responses on the 3.0 litre Nissan's.

I would think your question will change from "Whats the difference between the various GU models" to well to something else as you will find out.

Cheers

Gu II mostly red tail lights. Plagued by reliability issues, see forum (2000-2002)
GuIII mostly clear tail lights. Problems sorted, but not in the minds of some (2002-2004)
Gu IV current squarer shape compared to previous models. No real issues (2004-)

Many owners are more than happy with GuIII & IV. (I am one)

Previous owners are unsure of their cars due to unreliability issues and more likley to comments on sites like this, by owners of other makes of car with little or no first hand knowledge, but vehemently sprouting their anecdotal knowledge.

But what this will do, in your favour, is keep the price of GuIII & GuIV down to a reasonable level. Make hay while the sun shines, I did with no regrets, 150000km and a great car at a reasonable price.

GU series I - to early 2000 4.2 and 2.8 diesels and 4.5 petrol
GU series II - to sept 20001 4.2 3.0 diesels and 4.5 petrol
GU series III to end 2003 4.2 3.0 diesel and 4.8l petrol
GU series IV more or less till now -> new squarer body shape , heavier with slightly less performance and petrol downgraded to auto only with less power and no sub tank

All 3lt auto's 4 speed -> petrols new 5 speed auto

Could say more but don't know how to use spell check.

Tell Nissan you want a $15000 Discount so when the Motor Blow's you can put in another.

There so Desperate for sale's they will do it.

With all the Adverse Publicity Nissan have had with the trouble's associated with the 3 Liter Diesel i am Amazed anyone would even consider buying one ?

Then again some people believe anything there told unless of course your on the Nissan Merry Go Round you have a Nissan now No One Want's it and the only place you can trade it is at Nissan ?

what adverse publicity? I haven't heard anything other than what is read on a forum.
I think you don't know what you are on about. There are may buyers out there for 3l patrols and they haven't lost as much value as you say.

Mike and Leroy,

I wouldn't worry, it seems that John's lot in life is simply to stick his head up every time the 3.0L Nissan is mentioned. Not much contribution beyond that.

Matt.

Darian,
Fair enough, but at least the topic heading was understandable!

And perhaps instead getting on your high horse you should watch your grammar as well?

GUII - you won't be able to find one, they have all blown up
GUIII - some have blown up, the rest are waiting to
GUIV - you should be able to pick up one of these before they blow

Yep, agree. You only have to read this forum each day to work that out! Why do people do it to themselves, is it to save cash???????????????????????

If you want quality advice and opinions you must post on 4wd monthly - there you'll get a variety of intellectual responses from some highly technical educuated spell checker type beings - some who would have found grade 3 long and hard.

Sorry to have hurt your feelings Mav.
Just going by a friends experience, his Patrol diesel blew up(he is a diesel mechanic), and the following stuff around he had with Nissan. Not to mention the Hundreds of Nissan Patrol problems that are posted on this forum.
You have a patrol? If so great for you, i hope it goes for 500000km, but unless you only have one eye you have to admit there is a large number of issues mentioned here regarding the Patrol.
Regards Lyndon

You should do a search of all the Aussie 4x4 forums and see the problems that people have had with 3L Patrols. Go back over a couple years. One site has listed over 40 people with blown engines/turbos - as recently as 2005 model. Given that only a small percentage of owners would be forumites you wonder how high the number really is among all the non PC people. But what disturbs me most is the total lack of support from Nissan - they should have fessed up a long time ago and admitted there was a problem.

I just bought a 3L diesel Prado.

Not all 3lt patrools are bad, there are some out there who's owners are extremely happy with, and getting some quite high k's on them, there are also a small percentage, in comparison to the amount out there, that are bad and are waiting to go bang, if they haven't already, there is no doubt about that.
So, you need to ask yourself, is the one I buy a good one ? or is it one of the one's waiting to go bang ? is the price I pay worth the risk, and where am I going to be IF it does go bang ?
I know this isn't the information you were after but as there were so many "experts" coming out of the woodwork I figured I'd chuck in my 2c worth.
But as you make yourself out to be 'intelligent' you have likely already figured all this out for yourself therefore I have probably completely wasted my time.
Also, I refuse to use spellcheck, IMO it should be banned, mistakes add character.
If you can't read or make out what I've written....stiff!
Have a nice day :-))

So long as you purchase one of the post October 2001 series, you should have an excellent vehicle. Check out www.lonards-automotives.com.au/ for the differences between models (more than just the tail lights). He is fairly down on the 3 litre motor.

There are obviously a couple of people on this forum who are very bitter with what happened with theirs, and understandable if they got no justice from Nissan. Look at the numbers of them on the roads; most are going strong.

Unless you are planning to tow a full size or heavy caravan, you will find the 3 litre Patrol an excellent vehicle for comfort, reliability and value. You can add gauges so you know all is well, drive without stressing the motor (or be alert to any problems should they be impending). Good choice.

PS: I don't care if people can't spell so long as i can understand what they are saying - the forum is just a conversation, not a Senior English exam.
