After a couple of years or so looking over the fence I have became a member. Before I get to old for it I intend spending the winter months travelling the inland areas of your great country, see places and sights I have read about. In the past we have hired rentals but restrictions and red tape prevent going far from the black stuff. The intentions are to buy a Landcruiser & slide on. Following this and other forums there appears to be quite a variation in taxes fees etc. in different states, which state Vic,NSW.QLD would you pay the least tax etc on a new vehicle?
Any help and constructive suggestions would be appreciated. After a lifetime driving 4x4s I would like to spend some time doing the same just for fun, and when the temperature starts to climb be able to pop back over the ditch for the summer. The best of both worlds??

Wecome aboard Russnic,

Sorry I can't tell you anything about the taxes, it's like being a goldfish in a bowl, you can't tell the water has pees in it unless you are looking in from the outside.

You will find a great troup of interested travllers on the EO site. If someone can't let you know the answers to your questions they will certainly help trying.

I have a TLC with canopy that you may be interested to have a look at. All the best for your travels over here.

Chris

Hey Russnic, welcome aboard hope you get as much out of this site as the rest of us. As for your landcruiser question you may have to just shop around for the best prices, if you want 2nd hand try the government auctions, as all vehicles have been serviced regulary. all the best

Hayjude

"if you want 2nd hand try the government auctions, as all vehicles have been serviced regularly".

Not necessarily so mate!!!

Some Gov. dept's. believe in the "fix when necessary, theory" due to budget restraints. There is some utter crap coming through auctions these days.

The ambulance dept in particular cannibalise their vehicles going to auction to keep all the good bit for themselves. Some other Govt agencies do likewise.

Colin.

Welcome to the forum! We only joined recently and love all the info. We also love exploring N.Z. Last year we did the motorhome thing in Winter. We would be interested in your feed back on 4wding in N.Z. Eg. best time, road closures, best areas. A big ask! A general comment would be sufficient at this stage. We hope you succeed in your plans to do some inland exploring. Chris/Lindsay.

Hi there. A lot of Camper Vans / Motor Homes travel past here on the Southern Scenic Route a lot of Ozy and German tourists. 4wding in NZ I would recommend summer period, a lot of the higher tracks are closed in the winter because of snow ,road conditions, higher river levels etc. There are two good books one SI one NI on 4WD tracks that are available in most book shops . I have had a look at them and they cover most areas, at least those that I know, quite well. Ski and tour packages are very popular in winter and early spring.
Cheers

Russnic [NZ] welcome aboard

is that you pronunciation of "Rossneck"????
Sorry sport, just my idea of humour, sad really ain't it.

As for the tax thing I am not sure about, BUT if I made a comment, THEN and only then, would someone know far more than me about it.

So lets try eh!!!!. IMHO, NT is the best place to buy your car, more competition for sales of new 4by's and lower road taxes.

Now lets see what happens mate.

Welcome to OE, Colin.
