We are planning an 8 week trip from
brisbane through the kimberlies and 1/2 the
canning stock route. Are aboriginal permits required on the Wiso rd from
Tennant Creek to Kalkarindji via lajamanu and also the full length of the
Gary Junction rd from the Canning to the Tanami just west of
Alice springs. Any advice on permits through aboriginal land would be appreciated.

molzy,
Click on the
Treks button on the top of the page. From there look up the
treks that you want to go on. In the info it will let you know what permits are required and where you may get them from.

Molzy,
For the
Gary Junction Road you need permits from the Central Land Council NT and the WA Department of Indigenous Affairs. They are not difficult to look up and apply for. Altogether it took about two/three weeks for them to be approved. We travelled that way last August and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yep, very good advice Viv. Follow these links to to apply for permits online: www.clc.org.au/permits/permits.asp and www.dia.wa.gov.au/Land/Permits/
Have a great trip

You will need a permit for the Wiso Track from Tennant to Lajamanu. This one you will have to get from the Central Land Council in
Alice Springs. Not sure how difficult that will be to obtain as not many tourists have travelled that way.
You will need two permits for the full length of the
Gary Junction Road. One from Ngaanyatjarra Council(
Alice Springs) for the WA content and one from the Central land Council for the NT content.
I would apply for permits
well in advance(6 weeks) as experience has taught me that the Councils can be a bureaucratic mess when put under pressure to issue permits and that some of their policies are made on the run.
Cheers
