Good luck to those in the Kimberly, with cyclone George bearing down. First one of the season. I wonder how much water it will dump along the Canning ?

Close to crossing the coast at Port Hedland. If it follows predicted direction (who can predict with a cyclone) it will head in a more southerly direction rather than far inland in the Plibara. Looks like Broome got a bit wet yesterday, but it kept fairly well out to sea until it took a sharp lefty this morning to line up Pt Hedland. A trifle wet up there now by the looks.

I hadn't heard about the metre of rain - incredible. Predicting 200 mls in its path this time.

Cyclones are amazing the way they go out to sea, pick up more water and come back again. A few years ago my daughter was living in Cairns and a cyclone came through there, ended up going out to sea and re-forming, back again across the top end somewhere, the found its way out to sea again, before building up again and coming down to the south west and bringing us cyclonic rain - the same cyclone - opposite corners of the country.

Got a phone call from our daughter who is just out of Newman, she said that the wind is pretty strong there at the moment and that they are bracing themselves for the onslaught of rain. It should be a raining bearing depression by the time it gets there. Apparently one of the workers went into Newman today and while there tried to buy a loaf of bread, offered $10 but came home without one.

I have been wondering whether or not Jacob may follow, he seems to be sitting out there not quite knowing which way to go.

Cheers

Have only been through one cyclone so far, but was slightly involved in Tracey in 74.
Was on the wind fringes of one in WA once, I thought the steering and suspension were off because it was so hard to keep on the road. Roofrack didnt help. Got to Perth and suspension place said yep, all needs replacing. What a load! All was ok when the wind died down.

Judging by this mornings news, Headland might be a bit of a mess. One known casualty in a work camp, with most of the emergency services unable to assess damage until later today.

Was speaking to my youngest son in South Hedland on his mobile as the cyclone was passing at 2230. He rang me to find out the latest as there was no power etc there at the time. They had their front gate blown away and a tree snapped in half on the footpath. A lot luckier than some apparently.
Cheers,

Cyclones...the only reason we left the Pilbara after nine years.

Two people now confirmed dead and over twenty injured. Thats bad. And there's Jacob on the way.

We have a daughter and her family up there and even though you know they're safe, you can't help but worry.

Good luck to everyone up there.

Hello - was in Port Hedland all last week until Sunday. Cyclone stuffed up work plan so got flown out. I managed to sleep through the whole thing but it was indeed very windy (earplugs help..plus a substantial brick building). No power or water for most of the next day and having to cook our own tea for two nights was the main pain for us! Damage in town overall didnt seem that bad - lots of blown over trees and broken branches. On Saturday we managed to get to the De Grey River for a look (near our project area) - in full flood - great stuff. Some photos in my gallery.
Cheers
Greg

I sent one final shout after him to stick to the track, to which he replied “All right,” That was the last ever seen of Gibson - E Giles 23 April 1874
