Evening all, searched archives to no avail. After the failure of our original Cobb plastic base, we decided to try the new ss style.

We've always been very happy with the unit but feel the gauze base seems to slow the process down significantly. Spoke to the Cobb ppls today and were informed this is the only type available now, hence my question .. has anyone else swapped over with the same result?

The Cobb ppl have been fine to deal with and are happy to check it out for us, but I thought I'd check if anyone else is of the same/similar opinion.

Cheers

Have used our replacement once and I think you could be right the roast lamb took a lot longer to cook. Veggies done well before the roast. In fact I ended up cutting off the outside and putting the rest back in the Cobb while we ate tea. At the time I was thinking that the roast had not defrosted fully as I had placed it in the microwave to defrost but my better half thinks that maybe it is the new base being open and not allowing enough heat to stay in the cooking frame. So would be interested to see if anyone else feels we need more time for the new base or maybe have to use more heatbeads to compensate.

Found the same.

Our original base died about a year ago, and we had an option of which type of base to buy. Liked the look of the gauze type base, but it definitely slows the cooking process. All it means is that you get to have a couple more drinks while waiting for dinner to cook.

Not quiet on the subject, but we've had our Cobb for almost 3 years now and love it. A couple of weeks ago we stayed at a C/P up the north coast and was cooking a leg of lamb. We decided to go for a walk up the beach and upon our return someone had decided that they "needed" the Carry Bag much more than we did.

I emailed Cobb Australia/NZ last week to find out the availability/price of a new bag and am still waiting a reply.

I work under the assumption that an email should be responded to within 48 hours for a business. If this is not the case, what do you folks deem acceptable.

Although the product is excellent, this experience with their "customer service" has left a bitter taste in my mouth.

Rosco, thanks for your post. Both interesting and logical.
We bought our kids the new model Cobb for Chrissy, and they're rapt. We shouted ourselves a 2nd hand model . (S. Africa plastic, not Asian), and it's OK.
I shan't carry on, but how do you reckon a wrap of Al foil would go over the ss gauze?
We camp with the kids in 3 weeks, so will explore possible performance gains then.
(And sorry to the 'Post' re Cobb bag theft: I was sure your meal was the target
I had 20 baby octopussies (eh?) set to go on our Faik Cob recently. Dashed inside for a Frozen Bundy, dashed back out, and there's 12 left : the bloody hound is suckin' em down like oysters!!
And it doesn't even Roll in Octopussies, let alone eat'em!

Sheesh! . The 'Poodle Poster'.

Jeff

I've been thinking along the lines of plastic or foil wrapped around the outside.
Depends on what the Cobb Mob have to say.

Interesting perceptions.

I'm going to be a smarty pants and say my Mark II Cobb (with the black plastic base) is still going great guns.

The extra time to cook with the new one though sounds quite feasible.

I have been going to "upgrade" to the stainless steel base (cost is about $50) but have now decided to keep the Mark II in "original" configuration until I have to change.

Thanks Folks.

Good thinking 99

Mine is a "Mark I" and I would much prefer a replacement plastic base .......... if I could get one.

Yes Rosco,
This is what I thought would be the main problem with the new style base....

The crappy plastic did at least shield the cooking section from breezes and hold in the heat but i don't regret replacing the plastic with the mesh base, it just means a couple more beers while it cooks. As someone suggested it may be a matter of adding a few more beads.....
