I'm after a map to run in ozi which basically covers SE Oz. Vic & SA south of
Adelaide.
I presently run natmap when out of coverage by my local fire map, but that's cumbersome & not really all that necessary, particularly on a pda.
Is anyone aware of a decent map covering the above in one file?
Can the .ecw files be opened as an image in picture, or something like that, and then be cut down then re-calibrated? (and is that a pretty straight forward exercise, or a pain in the freckle?)
Cheers,
John

Natmap doesn't fit on your PDA? Remember memory is cheap, and the NatMap is pretty comprehensive.

Yes, Natmap does fit on the pda/memory card.
However when using it the other day with a couple of hundred waypoints loaded, I had to reset the device every half hour or so becuase it would freeze.
I'm trying to limit the amount of brain power it needs to use, while maintaining cross border ability. Presently all my travel is basically between
Melbourne &
Adelaide. So along with splitting the waypoints as much as I can, I thought it'd be worth downsizing the 707mb natmap as I'm not presently requiring anything north of
Adelaide-Vic/NSW border.
Memory is cheap. Processing power is at something of a premium though!

John ,sounds like you have Ozi loaded in the default memory area as I had a few moths back. It just locked up and I couldn't unfreeze it.
I have the South East for the PDA but is still quite a big file but covers as far North as Pinaroo and across to the border.

Hello - Geo-referenced ecws can be cropped easily with ER Viewer and then re-imported in OziExplorer with calibration included. Download the latest version of ER Viewer from here (requires regsitration)
" target="EOF" class="lbg">Site Link
Open the ecw file with this program - zoom in (or out) to get the area of the map you want to crop to in the viewing window (ie what you see is what you will get with respect to area - dont worry about resoloution, that is preserved) - once you are happy you have your area of interest use the "File - Save As" menu and save as a geotiff.
Import this file into OziExplorer using "File - Import Map - single DRG". You can then convert to OZF3 format using OziExplorer img2ozf program for use on PDA.
Wheter or not this process is a "pain in the freckle" is dependant on your current knowledge/need (and other possible solutions, not to mention existing medical conditions) I suppose - but thats how I would do it - image processing time excluded it would take about 5 minutes at most.
Cheers

Thanks Greg,
That's all pretty straight forward and a rather handy tool.
A degree of irony though - the cropped image, although about a fifth of the area of the original, is about fifty percent larger in file size! I'll have to play around with file types.
Thanks for the pointers though.

Arrgh yes - forgot about the size of the file we're playing with - bigger than average. You can adjust image output size by changing width/height during "save as" process - gives you an estimate of file size. You can also do it in the img2ozf process. Other option is to use ecw compressor (available from ermapper website) and compress saved file (save as er dataset first to retain geo-referencing) down that way...its a bit of a guessing game with respect to resolution obtained in end though. You may need to make 2 files to get quality required...best I can suggest at moment....have fun..and report back when you get success.
Cheers

Another way is to use MapMerge from the ozi site. You can set it to reduce the number of colours, map size etc. It will give you a good size reduction with very little los of colour/detail and out put file type for OziCE, as
well as MAP file

Can do that in the OZF3 conversion too.
Other trick in OZF3 conversion is to reduce the number of zoom levels since each is stored for faster zooming.

OP,
Set colours to 32 in Img2ozf reduces the file size considerably with very little impact, if any, on the image.
