I posted a question sometime back re LED 12VDC
Camp Lights and some were interested in my experiment so here it is.
I now have two 12VDC LED
Camp lights. One is a 600 mm light bar that throws a directional spread and works great for lighting a communal area. I intend to set up one more of these.
I have also purchased a 360 degree LED bulb that is intended for a masthead light on a yacht and it also throws quite a reasonable light. It is advertised as throwing an "Intense", light but I would not consider it intense. I am in the process of mounting the masthead light into a 240 volt pedestal lamp and should work a treat for standing on a
camp table or the like.
Now I am not suggesting that either of these lights throw enough light to perform open heart surgery by but I do not like my
camp area to light the night sky anyway, and besides.........the only person that will really require the light in the cooking area will be the
cook........I will be racked out in a chair somewhere drinking cold cordial:-)
So basically I am very happy, my
camp area is now totally LED 12VDC.

I should clarrify,
the 240 volt pedestal lamp will also be converted to 12VDC. The bulb is 12VDC and fits the 240V Bayonet fitting but rewired to 12V.

Hi Toy,
Do you have a link to these lamps?

Geoff,
all bulbs were purchased from the LED
shop www.ledshoponline.com/
the light bar is the 650mm on the front page and the masthead light is also on the front page under anchor/Masthead and Navigation.
I can go and get the part Nos if you like but basically the Masthead light needs to be the one with the parallel pin.

Thanks Toy,
That's great information.
I'm fairly sure I can handle the rest, thanks for the offer.

Most things have their +'s & -'s.
I also have an LED "light bar". It's not as
bright as either the Versalite, or the Torpedo light, I also use.
The one big plus for the LED is for cooking.
LED's do not attract insects like other lights and therefore they are great around the cooking area.
I have the LED light at the cooking/food preparation end of the Camper annex and the versalite. or torpedo light at the other end.
So, for areas where you don't want the critters falling in your food, the LED is the answer, but for lighting up an area, you just cannot go past the versalite, or the torpedo. (Both about the same lumens)
Current drain is similar for all three lights.

Agree 100%. We carry spare LEDs purely for the insect issue, and fluoros for the rest of the time.

Sand Man,
my main requirement was a 12VDC LED that would stand on its own. A number of sources told me I could not do it so, me being me had to prove that I could do it :-)
I know there are loads of good lights out there but I just had to be different :-0 I carnt help it.

No problem toytruck,
I can't help it either. That's why I have three of them.
All good though.

Brave man Tt.
If the Heart Surgeon reads the bit about the cold cordial, p'raps less-than-standard lighting will suffice on,
well, one occassion?
Attempted humour aside, you do seem a tad reserved. As I said, we're fairly happy with the 3w bulb, except that it is excessively directional.
So how would you rate the 360* light as a source for a couple? (Scalpels aside).

Jeff H,
I like it, it most certainly throws a 360 degree light with bulbs on top also. I wouldn't say this is a
bright light by any means, but for general duties moving around the
camp area (where the table and chairs are), not a problem at all.
I am not one to have my
camp area flooded with light. I prefer to get myself organised during the daylight hours and the dark time is for sitting around telling wild stories. In summary the LEDs suit me just fine.

Hey Toy Truck
A group of us on CMCA
forum were told that LED's cant provide good ambient lighting.
Well it started off with 2 people proving them wrong and then the rest of us started making our own. My Bus now has all the centre lights now led, spots led etc. Total of 150 led's (140,000mcd) and less than 4 amps if all are turned on at the same time. Great Lights. 1 of the guys even made one light for outside useing 75 led's. Thats one
bright light.
As you said...love it when people say it cants be done.
