I believe that everyone in business has the right to make a quid. However, when they make that quid by blatantly ripping off the public, I start to wonder.

I'm not sure if this is the appropriate area of the site to place this observation, but if not perhaps a more experienced user can give me some guidance...

Anyway, here goes...

Between Carnarvon and Karratha in WA there are no towns and three roadhouses (not including the one right at Karratha.) The middle one of these three relies on his "captive market" and charges accordingly. (Read: absolute ripoff) The ripoff is not confined to fuel. I have travelled this part of the world often over many years and the ripoff just keeps getting worse.

Now, doing what I do, and going where I go, I'm used to getting charged over the top rates...it's a part of doing business out there, but the roadhouse in question goes well beyond the pale.

If you have the fuel and food range, take my advice and wave as you go past it. If your range is limited, consider using the roadhouse either side of it..they are both considerably cheaper.

End of warning.

God gets even with them every so often by raising the water level of the Ashburton.
No doubt their premiums are faily high.

That sounds like the turn right to pick up miners wallets, $20 a hamburger place ? I refused to give them my custom (had plenty of fuel), and toddled down the roo infested highway to the next place. We were stuffed, eyeballs hanging out. Arrived at 9.30pm, everything closed.
I rekkon the ripoff owner phoned em !!

I discovered in 1995 that the Barkley Roadhouse were in the spin doctoring & ripp off busniness. Signs up saying that it costs $500 a day to run their generators (at those costs solar would be more cost effective) so "naturally" our prices are a bit higher... Yeah like $5 for an icecream and the diesel was around $1.80 ltr. An overnight site with limited power 6am - 10pm was gonna cost us $32, we drove on to the threeways where sensible prices returned...

Strangely enough I found Three Ways had the dearest fuel in June 05. Barkely wasn't too bad, but I didn't stay there. Between Alice and Brisbane 3 Ways was by far the most exe. Stayed in some new units at the back of a pub in Cloncurry. Very nice, friendly with reasonable rates. After driving from 3 ways, not in the best of health, it was a very welcome good nights kip.

At the Barkley in 1986 I was charged $11 a litre for Auto trans oil, I needed almost 10 litres. I think ATF is sill not that price in normal shops 21 years later. I travel that road often and I will not darken there doorstep. I've fitted long range fuel tanks to every vehicle I have owned (don't want to think about that cost) so I could avoid the places who practice highway robbery.

I can still remember stopping at Barry Caves in '84 when it was the only servo between Three Ways and the Qld Border. I was just after a drink which was good because they were out of petrol. There were about 10 carloads of tourists sitting there waiting for the truck due the following week ....

At least I had two jerries in the trailer which got me through to 3 ways.

I remember looking for that spot in 1990, it was on my map but....was glad to see the Tablelends stop then as I didnt have a diesel vehicle. Seemed much bigger in those days, much less traffic. I remember the girl in the jeans and akubra coming out to serve me. "Eeee ow ya goin luv" !!! Twas my first meeting with that alien race, the backpackers !
Paid $8 for a cold bottle of lemonaide further up the track, I didnt have a fridge. Spent a fortune on drinks for the kids.
I'm afraid the ripoff merchants have always been with us.

Footy,
I paid $2.50 for a bag of chips (our staple diet) on a surfing trip to the Gold Coast in 1972 in an EH Holden. Now that was a ripoff!

Phil, I'm glad you didnt need a plumber on a Saturday. $200 an hour to tighten a pipe.
Laying tiles, $1000 a day.
Replace radiator and install low water alarm. $1200

Ah yes, the Greed Coast. A sunny place for shady people. Finding an honest person without an agenda here is so rare that it's like finding gold.

This sounds like the location for that now famous film, that box office hit, "Pirates of the Ashburton"!! Me ole mates at Nanutarra Roadhouse!

They do have a reputation don't they. I already knew about 'em when I pulled in there about 2 years ago. It was getting a bit late and we were contemplating an overnight stop and we did need a top up of diesel. But I played it wise and firstly asked in the office about a spot to camp the caravan for the night. He told me it was $28.00 a night for a powered site. I told him I didn't need power having solar panels etc. He said it was $28.00 a night whether you had a powered site or unpowered site! The sites were real close the fuel pumps, trucks coming and going all night, lit up like Sydney Harbour Bridge on New Years Eve etc, etc.

We had words, not very nice words, suggesting he could expand, not his business, but his aaasehole by sticking his van sites and his fuel into a body cavity.

We had just enough fuel to get to Onslow and we headed off there. Arrived just after dusk and stayed in Onlsow for 2 weeks.

This is the same business that a few years ago, had the overnight camping spots along the Ashburton River shut down as it was affecting his "caravan park". I use the term loosely for a patch of dirt 30 metres way from his fuel pumps.

Sure, I know his overheads are high but the prices he charges and his attitude is way over the top.

I'll pass thanks,,,,,,,,

,,,,and as I now have an offroad van and long range tanks, I'll pull in there, have a slash, flush the toilet and leave - just for the hell of it!

Yeh, I made the mistake of setting up camp there for the night a few years back. Was able to cope with the flood-lit camping ground lit up like the day all night (perhaps that's why their fuel bill is so high), but the big trucks parked there thru the night with their engines idling and refrigerator motors running for seemingly hours on end made it the night from hell.
As I recall, I could have prob camped down by the river for free.

Ah yes. lovely Nanutarra .. home of the wildly excessively priced fuel, the $15 hamburger, the $10 pie .... I bought $30 worth of fuel and got the hell out of there and headed to Exmouth (our next stop), vowing never to return.

I'd be prepared to die of thirst rather then givem them another dollar of my "hard earned" ...

I can handle the ripoffs. It's the arrogant, cranky, grotty and incompetant staff that irk me. Some of these places could be gold mines if wasn't for the frontline staff. Then again, I wouldn't work there for less than 150K a year. Why would ya?

I once bought 1,600 litres of diesel at a roadhouse near Broome and they wouldn't let me off 45c for a drink - I kid you not! The brain sugeons at Yellowdine, the wizened old crone at Murchison.......hmmmmmm, I'll stop now.

When they are good they are good......and when they are bad they are horrid.

Welcome to the North West of Western Australia. We have always paid high prices, Nanutarra is no exception, was there last week, I never refuel there, use the toilet and leave. Unfortunately because there is a resources boom the attitude here is that everyone earns a large pay packet. Not true.

Cheers

Havent travelled these roads yet but will be wary when I do.
I cant stand arrogance and ripoff's, im in business but I never rip people off.
I wouldnt be able to handle the negative feedback, bad news carries fast.

Another place that comes to mind that the old man told me about, as he has travelled this road a lot, is the nullabour, the same person owns 3 roadhouses together there so gets most of them one way or another, have forgotten which ones but im sure the regulars are aware of them.

Cheers Pesty

Yep was travelling from Newman to Onslow via Karajini and as we have long range tanks just visited said r/house for a wee then onto Onslo where the fuel was 20c per ltr cheaper. Glad we got those big tanks. LOL.
I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

We paid $50 ea for two dongas just out of Tom Price. Now I know why they call em dongas ! Rat traps, hole in wall, tv that picked up nothing, floor split in half. The ones next to me were occupied by a couple of guys who arrived about 1am and left before 5. I wonder if they paid ? I know why they didn't stop LOL

They don't have an "off season" Phil. When the touros go quiet they still have the Geos, pipeliners, truckies, road workers, couriers, backpackers (those idiots travel any time of year), sales people and rustologists like me, just to mention a few.

I guess my original point was... yes they are entitled to make a dollar, but the roadhouses either side of them would have exactly the same operating costs, so why is it that the prices are so different? Obviously one of them will be able to retire a lot sooner.

And I had the cheek to complain about the "Miserable Bastard" at Balladonia. Welcome to the world of "we need to make a living too" They don't give a rats if you go somewhere else as the roads are awash with full wallet toting tourists.

In 2000 we went to Nanutarra for a cool drink and they had a sign saying you were not allowed to put your jerry cans of fuel in.i.e. you had to buy there bloody rip off fuel.I told the plonker to get stuffed and parked over the road and put 3 jerries in.

Geez you guys like bitching.
As so many of you have said "he's a rip off merchant". I agree!
So why bother to stop there or is it just so that you can complain again.
Most vehicles can carry enough fuel to bypass him but if you are caught short fuel wise, just buy enough to get you to the cheaper places either side of Nanutarra.
Simple ain't it.

How do you get past there in a Disco?

My basta*d only has an 82 litre tank and I am desperately seeking an auxilliary to go in with it. Finally ordered one this morning - 110 litres - but it's going to be 14 weeks before it's built and delivered!

Im.away,
Easy!
It's a TD5 auto, does about 900km/tank solo and about 650-700 towing my oldish Viscount van at around 95-100kph.
Weight of right boot helps too.

Yep, tried that. No way was I paying those prices. So we did 80K/h in the dark roo infested highway for around 200k to get to the next place. Arrived around 9.15pm, hanging out for a feed etc. CLOSED !!
All up and down that highway they make their own rules eg. The pub at Coral Bay etc etc.
