Just after a little help here.
Spent last week down at
Beachport and had a blast.
Anyway the day before I had to pack I could not roll down my rear window with either the key or the switch inside.
Well what a predicament out camping with next to no
tools and the rear window will not open and I also have a Milford cargo Barrier.
What to do?? I managed to cut up my arm getting the cargo barrier out from the rear seats. with the cargo barrier removed I was able to pull the rear door apart and wind the window down with jumper cables and small piece of wire attach directly to the power window motor (sigh). at least now I can open the back up to pack my bleep and get
home.
Anyway to cut a long story short the window will go up but not down with the key or switch. I can hear the relays ticking but no power is getting to the motor.
I currently have a piece of wire that is sticking out the tailgate that I need to connect up to the battery to get the windows to go up or down, just reverse the polarity.
Has anyone else had this problem? do I need to replace the control box or is there some other solution??
Cheers for any advice

I had the exact same problem a few years ago. There is a relay box on the pass side just behind the front
seat (this was in a 2 door) I replaced all the relays inside because after awhile the contacts get very pitted and no longer make a connection.
Very easy job I think it took me about half hour from start to finish.
Cheers

where do you get the replacement relays from as they are not the normal relay you have for your spotlights for example??

No they are smaller relays which you can get from either dick smiths or jaycar. It would be easiest if you pull on out and take it to them so you can get the right pin lay out. These are as cheap as.

G'day Craig
We have a 93 4 Runner and I have been worried for some time that the rear window might fail on one of our annual big trips. I would like to fix the problem before it occurs. Do you have part numbers or description of the parts needed fo fix it. Particularly wild parts not Toyota.
Cheers
Peter

Mate this is about the only inherent problem in runners with the power rear window.
Mine went a couple of years ago, had to replace the motor in the tailgate. My mechanic got an aftermarket one and cost me arround $350.00 genuine 0ne from toyota was about $500.00. Still if you get 10years out of them it is not a bad run

G'day Pete
Do you have info on the wild window motor and where you get them? I would like to replace the motor in our 4 Runner before it lets us down. Another inherent problem with 4 Runners is head gaskets at about 150,000. I have heard of quite a few including ours that have done it. A fairly exy job to fix also, about 3 grand.
Cheers
Peter

Hi Peter,
Sorry I have been slow getting back to you, I have done 3000ks since last thursday, 1150 ks yesterday. The window motor was after market, but my mechanic scourced it, if you are in NSW I can find out for you from him, the replacement motor also played up for a while but seems ok now.
Mate I was so lucky, when I brought the 4runner I could not find a good v6 and finished up buying an immucalate unit with the 22 r motor, slower but one of the most bullet proof motors ever built. Like the big 6cylinder diesels nobody can tell me how long they last because they dont seem to wear out. 450000ks untouched is the highest mileage I have verified.
Mine is a baby with 208000ks
Cheers Pete

The rear window motor is exactly the same as the front power windows. And I'm pretty sure it's the same as the 80 series as
well, toyota just use the same motor for all. If you are worried, go to a wrecker and grab and old motor and just put it in the tool box.
As far as the control box goes, I have heard of them going on a few runners/surf's, you can just hot wire
battery power and bleep off the control box. Just hook it up to the existing switch via a spotlight relay or similar. The only down side is it won't go be be be beeep when the door is still open, ie you could potentially (if you are dumb) wind the window out while the trailgate is down and have your window fall out and smash. Personally, when/if my control box goes, that's what I'll be doing.

Hi Jeff
Thanks for the very useful information. I will go to a wreckers and get a motor before our next trip. I might also see my auto electrician to have a switched wire around the box installed as a safeguard and use the box until or if it fails and then just switch it over.
Cheers
Peter

Just on the motor thing, prob best to just pop the carpet cover off the window mechinism at the back and look at the model no. of the motor, it will most likley have a R or an L at the end dictating weather it is a left or a right hand side motor.
