Hi all,

I have the opportunity to purchase a brand new HP iPaq (HP iPAQ rx5965 Travel Companion) for almost half price (staff discount through a mate). These new units have a built in GPS.

Has anyone tried using Oziexplorer on one of these units ?

I'm curious as to how good the map display is on a 3.5 inch screen.

Any other tips?

Thanks in advance
Phil P

Hi RovingOz,
I use a 4700 too.
Just interested in what in-car mount you use.
My Seidio died but not before deforming the 4700 pcb so it wont work with a cable plug.

Now l have a Clic-On, which is nicer looking but wont communicate due to slightly bent pcb........

Cheers

Hi Bob
We use the Arkon, attaches to windscreen with suction mount. Good speaker and holds it well over the bumps

Hello, Many people use PDAs with OziExplorerCe - the lates wave of PDAs with inbuilt GPS is a boon. Whether or not the small screen is good is a personal thing, some people like it, some prefer larger screen options - impossible for us to decide on this facet for you. PDA certainly works for me (e.g. try carrying a laptop through the bush at night for 5 hours:)
Cheers

One for me too please Phil!

i've been gazing at these, needing to replace my Palm Vx as it won't sync with my Mac anymore.

they can be loaded with Tom Tom and if you think about it, this screen size is what the turn by turn products use - I accept that's different from the maps we use on Ozi.

There is also an iPaq smartphone that comes with built in GPS too, but as one reseller noted that model has a square screen when all the sofware is geared for a rectangular screen. the PDA you're getting is rectangular.

What attracts me to them is they have bluetooth and wireless internet capacity, plus the calendar and address book. The ones with mobiles included could be all just too much in one device - can you be using the turn by turn whilst checking a calendar and talking on the phone??? prolly not.

I prefer my PDA with oziexplorer to the Magellan Color. Better in all respects and so flexible with a 2 gig card. Just do it!!

Hi Phil,

I use a HP 6515F and it works a treat, especially when you can load all the maps you need on the 4GB Sd card. I have retired my Garmin since the PDA turned up. It is even a phone. Tech is wonderful these days. I would go for it mate. You wont be disappointed. Just make sure you get a car mounting/charging kit at the same time otherwise the GPS will last around 1 hour before become flat.

Good luck

Dave

the RX5965 is a handy gadget and the built in gps makes if fairly bulky.

Bought one recently to replace a 'retired' 4150. Initially unimpressed by it's size & weight, and by comparison so the 4150 the 5965 is slow to start up & run, though the processors are similar, I think.

The brain size of the 5965 menas that it should be able to handle a fair number of applications, and as it comes with Tom Tom I've been having fun playing with that. Next Melbourne trip will be something of a test!

I have installed Ozi, and there seem to be no conflicts with Tom Tom (I wondered if it would get confused with the gps interface, though i've not tried running the two programs at the same time!).

What's the biggest SD card you can get these days? I have a few 2gb cards, and will get something bigger. Presently have an aerial photo of the farm, regional CFS map book, Raster 250k Aust mosaic and one or two others, but never enough!

For me, I think the 5965 will be used as a navigational device (as opposed to an organiser I keep on me daily).

Route planning is best done on a map or bigger screen. The pda is then used on the road to tell me where I am.

I used the OziCE settings manager (I think that's the program - lets you program the buttons on the pda to control various functions in Ozi). On the 4150 I found that, once Ozi had been opened and then closed, the buttons stopped functioning in their original settings (ie opening the calendar, contacts etc).

The 5965 comes with a handy car mount (suction cap for the windsreen), car charger, usb cable etc. It has the handy ability to rotate the screen and the buttons are good (ie 'start' & 'close', plus four or five application launch etc. and the navigational one).
