A couple of years ago there was a topic on ladder design for Troopy roofrack ladders. Has anyone designed the ultimate ladder??
My thoughts would be an attachment to the rear (passengers side)
barn door. Most I've seen are attached to the side rails- which would negate using the side rails as
rock sliders??
Preferably a permanent installation, as I can see a removable one would be a hassle to stow.
Anyone with a good design- or seen a good design I would be grateful.
Stay Coool out there!!

I guess it depends on how much you use the rack, we only used our troopy for weekends away about once a month and 2 or 3 extended outback trips a year, but we always opened the little door, stood on the step, then up on the false floor which was just above the interior mudguard height and then up on the spare tyre, We aren't tall but found it ok, you do have to watch the spare tyre when it is wet as it gets slippery.

I have made quite a few over the years for Troopies. and put them on the LH rear behind the mud flap, attached to the lower sill and bottom of the roof rack.
They will add to the width of the vehicle and snag on close shrubs etc. From memory the ladder would be about 200mm wide for the rungs.

Sorry Signman no photos. The ladder can be made from round tube or 20/25mm square.
Have a look at the rear quarter and follow the line up over the vent at around 300 - 340 wide, and bent to follow the line of the side panel.
No Matt, not the one you are thinking of.

I use a bushranger quickstep and fit it over the rear tyre .

G'day mate
The Bushranger unit looks a good simple idea. Does it allow you to actually climb onto the rack- or just access item toward the rear of the rack. About how far is the 'step' off ground level??

With the bushranger unit it has three height positions . I can have the step about half way up the tyre . I step from the bumper bar , onto the step , then onto the top of the tyre and then onto the roof , then onto the rack . You might dint the roof if you stand on it though .

I've added a step to the small (LHS) door on top of the housing for number plate lights. Just an L shaped bracket from 2 mm steel bolted to the door behind that housing. This provides the missing step in the ladder - from bumper to this step to top of spare wheel to roof. Bit of a stretch, but works
well.

Couldn't do without
mine.
Got it sent over from Jaram in WA. Goes on the side near the rear wheel (either side) - simple adjustable clamps for rack and bolts into sill behind rear wheels( drill 3 holes). Very light.
Do a
pic if you want. Hassle to store the bushranger I thought and being lazy.....

Yep I got one from Endee Metals here in
Perth. Its aluminium, it goes on the small door. I've had it for a few years now. Cost just under $200 with me fitting it which was easy. There's only one thing to be aware of and that is you don't pull yourself up with it as doing this will pull the window frame out thus the rubber seals won't be sealing.

Signman,
Have a look at the back of my Troopie. When I made the twin wheel carrier I removed the bracket that held the spare onto the back door. Using the captive nuts in the door I made a ladder that fitted to the back door.
The door must be closed when using the ladder so that the weight is not just taken on the hinges. I had it on the 75Series and have now transfered it to the 78Series.
It was not hard to make but this being the first one took a little time to make. If you would like more info or some photos MM me.

G'day,
I've always just stood on the spare (mounted to a Kaymar) and was shown a good way of getting along the sides-slide open side windows, open driver/passenger door and climb up walking on the window frames. I was reluctant at first but can see no harm.
BUT this idea of reusing the old door mount is very good! (if you have replacement bar)
Just realised though I'm way to lazy to do anything as the tyre/window method requires no work :-)

if you are interested in a role out ladder let me know and i will have a look at my roof rack tomorrow, it role out from under the roof rack and folds down and sits on the rear step or the tow bar so nothing obstructs the rear doors.
