Barn Doors on Cruisers

In my quest for a new fourby I have come across a lot of ex government 100S Cruisers that have Barn doors on the rear instead of the traditional Cruiser set up.

My question is how do you strenghten the door to prevent them failing at the hinges.
I've driven heaps of them at work along lots of corrugations and the doors practically shake to bits.
With some of the additional items ie ARB Bull Bar and winch, roof rack, snorkel etc on the ex government cruisers I am contemplating buying one if I can overcome the suspect rear doors.

Cheers Kev

The 105 series barn doors shaking to bits is not an issue I've heard before Kev, although with wear it is common to get an annoying squeak now & again which can normally be adjusted out. The old troopys & Defenders with the spare tyre on the door on the other hand had problems with tearing the outer skin off.

Gday Kev

I think the best bet is to buy new hinges, I think most of the wear and sag is in the hinge pin. From what I have seen, the Cruisers sag a bit more than the Patrols, but they open past 90 degrees which may be a bit weaker, but it gives you far better access. The other thing the nissans have that I don't think the cruisers have is a support for the larger of the doors, which would help stop the sag

Andrew,

ARB sell a hinge for the Nissan that opens the small door to 90 degrees. If you really want the Nissan door to be like the Cruiser door. Hope it is useful info for somebody.

Thanks Andrew,

I just wish that they would copy Nissan and build better barn doors in general. A support for the larger door would be a bonus and definately stronger hinges.
If I'm lucky I'll find an ex government one with the traditional doors.

Gday Trevor and Kev - I would like the doors to open more than the 90 degrees they currently do, but in my previous life as a carpentor I noticed that the 180 deg hinges on cabinets etc always are the first to sag and go out of alignment, even though they are far more expensive and look to be heavier duty than the std 110 degree jobbies. I will put up with dors that only open 90 degrees but open properly, the only trouble I have is if I have been in and out of a 100 series at work, then go home and open the door on the Nissan and walk into it because it didn't open as far.

I generally prefer the barn door set up to the tailgate/lift up window arangement in most day to day life, but tailgates are great seats, tables, things to stand on while accessing the roof rack etc so at times I wish I had the tailgate....

Cheers Andrew

Hi Kev,
Unless I am wrong, the barn doors are only fitted to the 'standard' landcruisers, which have non turbo 1HZ engines live axles and manual trans. Drop tailgates come on the GXL which come with many combinations of engine/gearbox and IFS.
The back doors on my standard do not rattle or squeak.

So if I can get hold of one for the right price, I'll have a better base to modify in regards to suspension in comparison to the IFS models just for general touring not rock hopping etc.
I am already thinking of throwing a turbo under the bonnet as well as dual wheel carrier and long range second fuel tank.

What is an accepted suspension upgrade, I was thinking 2 - 3" at the most. What's your opinions.

Cheers Kev

Mike,
You can get a GXL with rigid front end and 1Hz motor, and fold down tailgate. Soon to be a thing of the past though!

We have a 2000 78 series Troopy with the barn doors, spare wheel attached to the door, etc. Done 220.000km and a lot of that has been rough roads but no problems at all to date. No rattles from the doors and no sign of any sag at the hinges or problems with the spare. Pity about the rear window washer that packed up 2 years ago but we live without it.

Hi Kev,
In my research I found that only TJM would state that their dual wheel carrier would fit the barn doors. ARB and Kaymar said that the RHS will fit but not the LHS because of the door handle. I bought and fitted the TJM and am happy with it.

Mike,

I haven't fully researched the rear wheel carrier but did you try Opposite Lock?
They fitted a dual wheel carrier to the Camel 100S from 4WD Monthly and from memory it had barn doors (correct me if I'm wrong).

I am looking a the 02 - 05 models in manual if possible.

Cheers Kev

Kev,
because you asked a direct question I will answer. I rang Opposite lock with a query. I spoke to a guy who took all my details and undertook to ring me back with an answer. Still waiting a month later. The amount of money I am spending I refuse to be treated like this so Opposite Lock is off my list!
