Hi All,

A Happy New Year to All.

I have a 1998 3.5 Petrol Jackaroo, and is the past 12 months the engine check light has been coming on.

I have worked out a patter, and this may sound silly but it comes on only when the air is not 100%, for example when following a smoky vehicle, or if the air is not clean, for example it came on when the bush fires here in Vic had the air very dirty.

The light goes off once the air is ok and clean again.

Does any one know what engine sensor would be causing this?

Hoping someone can help.

Craig.

Craig, best to drop into your local Holden service dept and have them connect up the Tech-2 decoder. This will tell you exactly which sensor has been activated and they should (you would hope) be able to tell you what the cause is and therefore the remedy.

Thanks.

Have booked it in, but the bastards want to charge me around $80.00 just to tell me what's what.

Thanks again..

My first guess would be the O2 sensor.
They monitor the gases and adjust the engine accordingly. They are very sensitive but don't always need replacing when the light comes on.
I would get it checked out to be sure but to me it doesn't sound serious.

We have gas on our Frontera (3.2 version of same engine. Thought it was only later Jacks that had the 3.5 though). Our engine light remains on due to the LPG and goes off evenutally when running on Petrol. The longer on gas the longer it takes to go off. It can take more than 1000k's. Advice given to us to FIX the problem was to disconnect the light, DUH. (by the gas boofs not by Holden though)
We clean the sensors ultrasonically and thet are then just fine.
We have 2 sensors on ours and they are around $200 ea and not compatible with anything else it would seem. That's $400 to get the light go out for a while.

Hope that's all it is for you.
Cheers

HAd a similar problem in a 99 3.5 Petrol. Was usually accompanied by a loss of power if you really jump on the pedal. Turned out to to be the O2 sensor. Was right as rain after it was replaced.

Although diesel, my CE light has been on for years - had it analyzed ($50) a few years back - mechanic said it was a sensor in the throttle body - was going to cost hundreds to replace - he said my worst problem was that the light was on - he was right - engine still running sweetly years later - willl have to fix it somehow when I need to trade it - hell - it might even go off by itself before then !!

Sounds like the O2 Sensor which is located underneath the colling system overflow reservoir. Check for a faulty connection. May be all it is.

If it is the O2 Sensor you can buy an equivilent from repco for 1/2 the price of the genuine one.
