Hi Folks,
Fitting Tv to the new van. Trying to get rid of the wieght and bulk of a preloved 34cm CRT tv.
Was going the rounds to go to a cheap lap top ($750 - best I could find but with only 256meg of RAM) with a TV card ($150) when I saw a Sony DVD player with an 8 inch LCD screen for $350 which on aking had an extra input for a desk top digital box. ($69).
I know that the screen is smaller than a computer but the compactness and weight is appealing to us. Anybody using a similar setup ? comments please

Personally , I think thats a tad small to be trying to watch TV on.
You can buy a 14-15 inch LCD Screen for around $300 , a DVD player for around $50 , and a STB , for around $50.
Cheap enough setup , and a reasonable size to watch in a van.

Hi Flappa,
The cheapest LCD Tv 15 inch I have found is $350. The salesman at Harvey norman also pulled a face when I asked about problems they have had with it.
Have you any insight into the where ffrom for the $300 version.

There is one in our Local DSE(
Canberra) at the moment for $299.00. Its not a widescreen variety. (might be a stock clearance item ??).
I have also seen them around various
places (mostly discount
places, so quality ??) for around that $300-$350.

I have a Dick Smith lcd screen tv which I dragged around Oz and was more than impressed with it. It runs of 240v or 12v, which was handy. I think it was about $600, and it can double as a computier screen if needed.
And I just used a $10 indoor antenna when I wanted to watch tv and it was good. Mind you, I did not expect to get a picture out in the "boondocks" so if you want something wth more grunt you will need to look further afield. there has been plenty of discussion here on tv aerials.

Hi Jack,
Thanks for taking the time... I think you have saved us some real dollars. I had been chasing advice on a good arial.... never thought about using a indoor arial.
We are just beginning the touring game and don't expect to be too far from a town at least for a while so we will try the indoor... if it doesn't work... it will be the same spend of the dollars .. be it later.
Thanks also for the info on the Dick Smith tv. We recently got a DS store in
Ballina. I will look at one today.... currently $499.
Thanks again.

We have wall mounted a KROSS LCD TV, which gives an excellent picture, added Digitor speakers, one mounted in the living area and one over the bed. The speakers on the KROSS had very tinny sound, and they got broken off when i left the telly on top of the fridge one rough road day (before we found a suitable multi directional wall mount). The telly survived the fall. We have just added a Lennoxx 12 DVD player from Deals Direct (cheaper than eBay), as it was the only 12 v DVD player without its own screen we could find. It all plugs together easily. We got the DSE set top box for when we are in a digital area the $130 not the cheaper one, on the recommendation of one of the caravaners web sites (can't quite remember the link). It needs to run off the inverter. We got a booster but it was useless so won't persist with it. The T shaped Happy Wander antenna isn't brilliant.

Hi Motherhen,
Thanks for taking the time... I think we will be going the bigger screen route with a set top box. We will abandon the DVD idea - it was for smallness on unit overall... but the lady boss is leaning towards the bigger screen.
Thanks for info on happy wanderer arial.... initially we will buy the Tv and
test it with an indoor arial and only spend the dollars if it doen't work

I've thought often about a TV, set top box, LCD this and DVD player that in my van.
But on thinking further, I realise how much I enjoy listening to the news on the radio like I used to as a kid and the captivation of a good book before bedtime. These things I do because that why I bought a 4WD and an offroad van - to leave all that stuff behind for a few months a year.

Hi Bilbo,
Thank for your philosophy. We will stay with ours philosophy Its probably called "creature comforts."
The DVD payer with LCD screen was really purchasing a combo that had a compact size. I was really buying it to provide a compact TV screen. From advice on the site we will abandon the DVD/LCD screen idea and stick with a straight LCD dual voltage tv
Even then, If we are somewhere pristine we won't need to turn the switch to on..... for the other occaisions or the early nightfall days (winter) we probably will. ... like the depth finder in the boat...I only use it in shallow water or near a reef.

Ski,
Each to thier own mate. My biggest prob is that I go bush to find a bit of gold, been doing it fer years, and when I get back at night I'm totally 'cheese crackered'. Too tired to even focus my eyes! It takes me a month to read a book that should be read in 3 days!
Take care,
Bilbo

Funny Bilbo, the new K Karavan comes with a quality image for fitment and radio CD player MP3 player combination that fits the image. The thing I am most concerned about is making sure the radio signal is as good or better than the vehicle rather than play CDs or MP3s. That is more important than a TV even though we have one with the DVD too of course. Day to day radio with the analysis on the ABC is my greatest communication need. Internet and phones comes before TV and a looooooong way before recorded music.
