Can anyone tell me what is the best 2nd battery for a GU Patrol, to run an Engel fridge and UHF?
Currently I have got a Century N70ZSS but it doesn't seem to be doing the job properly.

Myself and a good friend independently decided the Exide Extreme was the way to go ... mine has worked flawlessly for two years, he's already had one replaced under warranty. We both run all our accessories of the 2nd battery.
Cheers

We use the Optima 900cca deep cycle battery. It is smaller than most others and about the same weight but cost's about $450- $500 not cheap but a very good battery it is vibration proof and fully sealed. It can also sit for twelve months and still hold a charge. If you happen to flatten it it will be fully charged in about an hour, we have an electric winch as well as the engle and the uhf and have never had a problem with it.

Unfortunately the weakness of the Optima's and similar valve regulated batteries is they dont like heat whilst charging. Although they cycle well etc - if they are exposed to heat whilst charging they are more suseptable to damaged - overcharging - and will then only last as long as a good wet or gel battery. As with any battery keep em cool especially if you want them to last.

Heat is generally a killer of all lead-acids. With this in mind, and a turbo in the vicinity, I fitted a shroud around the battery, and for good measure, a 100mm 12v computer fan (avail Jaycar or Altronics) to suck fresh air in from the grille and blow down the gap between the shroud and the battery. Controlled by a thermostat switch, mounted on the shroud nearest to the turbo, to cut in at about 50degC (avail from Radio Spares). The fan could be just run off the ign switch, and it draws only about 150mA. Works well, got over 2 years out of a cruddy ED5, then it only died coz someone stuffed it forme.

I had an AC battery installed in April 2000 (85amp, $185)). For some reason it crashed with a hole in the top of the battery in Oct 01. I replaced it with a 125amp Federal Battery ($229), it is still going strong and came with a 3 year warranty
