Hi all,

I've done the Mittagong - Jenolan route a few times and wanted to know if anyone knew of a more "scenic" route to from Jenolan to Blackheath. The ideal route seemed to take in the six foot track, but I understand that is foot only.

Is there a route whereby I can go from Megalong Valley? Alternatively does the Cox's River Rd cut further south than Lowther, perhaps from Marsden Rd?

Any local knowledge much appreciated. Feel free to send an email to my login at gmail.com if knowledge is best shared personally.

Cheers,

Tim

Cox's River Road to Lowther and then to Hampton is the only way other than the Jeolan Caves Road from Hartley.

Yes! the Six Foot Track is a walking trail only, you would certainly have a problem getting a vehicle up Nellies Glen, Lockers or not.

Never used to be that way, when I was a hell of a lot younger we were able to explore all these now inaccessible areas on our motorcycles.
Now just about every bloody gate has a lock on it or a sign declaring it to be private property and threatening to prosecute tresspassers.

I know a lot of these tracks/roads are Public Rights Of Way but it's not worth the hassle with the landholders.

Hi Tim,
Turn eastish off Jenolan Caves rd
Go down the Black Range, (Try not to get lost in the forest getting to the start of the black range rd)
Turn right at the T intersection (follow the 6' track symbols,)
Thru the gate (Kiangatha Property) across 3 water xings ok for soft roader (unless heaps of rain. The 1/2 km past the gate can be very slippery)
follow to cattle yards
turn right and go around yards and down murdering gully to Cox's river for morning tea (shelter shed with tables, wheelchair toilet, and small beach) follow 6' track signs. Return to yards to continue as no thru rd from river to the general public.
veering left (northish) at the yards follow thru 1 unmarked gate, then 1 Kiangatha property Gate then last gate on top of hill.
proceed down road to bottom of hill then TR follow this thru the Kanimbla valley until you get to marsden swamp rd TR (no more gates only the odd cattle grid)
follow thru valley past lowther siding rd and follow to cox's river (duddawarra bridge) then you hit the seal around the bridge just follow cox's river rd out to the Great Western Hwy at Little Hartley. You'll see the old cocatoo cabin cafe on your right about 200m away at the intersection.
And Bob's your auntie.
I think I remember the Marsden and Lowther roads the right way around may be the other way but you will work it out when you see the map

Have fun
Tour Boy

Hi Tour Boy

Essentially that is the walk (Six foot track) from Black Mountain to Cox's River. I've walked it a few times, but wasn't sure if you could take a vehicle along there; do you need permission from anyone, otherwise I'll drive down to Cox's, great camp area....
Thanks

Hi Tour Boy,

Thanks for the info. From what I can see on the maps, you've got them the right way round. Will advise if I encounter problems.

Excited to try it now!

Hi,
no permission, no locks there used to be a guy at the last gate that lost the plot and locked the gate except to us operators until his sons belted the keista out of him and told him to wake up to himself, which of course he didn't...So the nice neighbour kindly bulldosed a new road 20m to the east on his own property, put new fences and reopened it to the public. now that's bush justice!!!
Until recently I have taken tourists on the 6' track for the past 11 years up to 3 days per week.
If somone has locked off somthing in the last couple of months I would be very surprised.

When you are heading down the Black Range all of the tracks on the RHS are locked off as part of the Kanangra Boyd Wilderness area. By the way I have seen heaps of rainbow trout in the Jenolan River below Hellgate Gorge in excess of 5kg no fibbing.
When are you all heading out that way I might come for a drive. My mate owns the property that backs onto the suspension bridge so if he hasn't sold it we can miss most of the walk. That is key acess only.

Hey Tour Boy,

I'll drop a note when I'm going that way. I could see it should be possible, but your knowledge is great to confirm it.

Will make a nice addition to the loop. Will try to up a route when I can.

Cheers,

Tim

Just a few things to add.
You will be going thru private land so please don't leave any crap behind.
There is a small camping area at Alum creek which is about 1 to 1.5 Km after the three creek crossings allready spoken about. No water or facilities, but there is good drinking water in Little River. (the three crossings) Great along the river in early morning.

Tour Boy,

Thank's heaps, have not been right in there forfar too many years and was given to understand that all was lost to the public.

I do remember going in through the State Forest. I remember locality that appeared on the map I had at the time called, I think "Lemon Tree Hill". I also recall an abandoned house which happened to be the first ever pre-fab steel frame I had ever seen. That was over forty years ago now and I'd hate to think how old the house itself was.

Glad to hear that a little of that area is still accessible.

Timglobal, my aplogies for the bum steer.

Hi Ian,
The Yards I spoke about are the Lemon tree cattle yards at the bottom of min min saddle and at the top of the decent into murdering gully if they are the ones that you remember.

Hi Tour boy

Just so I have this correct.....

I understnad getting in from Black Mtn, after going down and visiting the Cox's you come back up to the cattle yards and veer around to the right, missing the road that takes you back up Min Min saddle and onto ALum Creek, and continuing straight ahead...is that correct.....??

That sounds right Tourboy,

As I recall we used to come down a ridgline to the house and yards and then there was a further descent from there.
I do admit that it was just over forty years ago and you know what us old geriatric farts are like, we remember everything through rose coloured glasses.

We did find some glorious swimming holes to alleviate the summer heat.

By the way, I strenuously deny that we rode steam powered motorcycles.

I have put this together for my benefit , as Gramps and I are going there on Wednesday . I thought I would post it in case others wanted it . If it is incorrect please let me know .
Thanks again Tour Boy , Vince and old fart Ian W.
Willie .

GETTING IN TO THE COXS RIVER ( compiled from answers made by EO members Tour Boy and Vince NSW and Ian W)

Turn “eastish” off Jenolan Caves Rd .

Go down the Black Range , (Try not to get lost in the forest getting to the start of the Black Range Rd )

Turn right at the T intersection (follow the Six Foot Track symbols)

Through the gate (Kiangatha Property) . Continue across 3 water crossings to cattle yards (ok for soft roaders unless heaps of rain -the half km past the gate can be very slippery ).

Go around yards and turn right (the Lemon Tree cattle yards at the bottom of Min Min Saddle and at the top of the descent into Murdering Gully ) down Murdering Gully to Cox's River for morning tea (shelter shed with tables, wheelchair toilet, and small beach) follow Six Foot Track signs.

Return to yards to after going down and visiting the Cox's (no through road from Cox’s River) - you come back up to the cattle yards and veer around to the right, missing the road that takes you back up Min Min saddle and on to Alum Creek, continuing straight ahead .

Veering left (northish) at the yards follow through one unmarked gate, then one Kiangatha property gate then last gate on top of hill .

Proceed down the road to the bottom of hill then TR . Follow this through the Kanimbla Valley until you get to Marsden Swamp Rd . TR (no more gates only the odd cattle grid)

Follow through valley past Lowther Siding Rd - follow to Cox's River (Duddawarra Bridge) where you hit the tar road around the bridge . Just follow Cox's River Rd out to the Great Western Hwy at Little Hartley. You'll see the old Cockatoo Cabin Cafe on your right about 200m away at the intersection.

I think I remember the Marsden and Lowther roads the right way around may be the other way but you will work it out when you see the map

CAMPING NOTE
There is a small camping area at Alum creek which is about 1 to 1.5 Km after the three creek crossings already spoken about. No water or facilities, but there is good drinking water in Little River. (the three crossings) Great along the river in early morning.

Hi to all you lucky buggers doing the trip (I'll still be at the fires) If you walk to the upstream end of the cox's river campsite you will see the great australian walks lodge. Just below the lodge is a walking track. This will take you to the suspension bridge about 1km reasonably easy walk from this point (1.5km from the toilet). About 20m downstream from the bridge is the best swimming hole in the area. DON'T DRINK THE WATER!!! take drinking water and watch for joe blakes and as of 2 weeks ago the river stopped flowing.
Enjoy

HI,
The fires aren't affecting the Cox area at all.
I spoke to the owner of "Kiangatha" today working at the fires with his dozer and he said that it is all open and can't legally be closed as it is a gazzetted road.

let us all know if you enjoyed the trip when you return.
