Hi Folks
Just seeking the latest opinions on 12v cooling fans for an off road camper trailer. We have a single battery and small solar panel, so looking at something efficient, that can be converted to 12v.
Apart from the standard oscillating varieties we have seen a number of Coleman items - the Zephyr and Free Standing unit (foam fan blades) and the Tent Fan. Can anyone recommend a make/model they've been happy with? Thanks
Mike

Try visiting our cousins in the boating fraternity.
www.whitworths.com.au/main_home.asp
has a good range of stuff online, as other boating stores do.
12 Volt
Shop www.12volt.com.au/ would also be a good option.
Have a look at some of the inline fans, not just the oscillating ones. They seem a bit more robust that the oscillating which might shake to bits in a camper unless packed.

Andrew,
I have two 8" 12 volt fans over our double bed in our caravan. We are living full time in our van traveling around Oz.
I do not know the exact wattage or amps our fans use, but I do know how much our 200amp AGM battery is depleated only after a few hours usage with the 12 volt fans. I would guess they use at least 5-6 amps each per hour. Very noisy and don't shift much air. So we stopped using them and can run the 240V fan through the inverter all night with little loss of voltage from the battery. By morning, after watching TV, lights, water pump and running fan all night, voltage is down to about 12.3 to 12.4v. We have 5 x 115watt solar panels for charging, but also run an Engel 40litre beer frideg and a Waeco 160 litre two door fridge freezer, so we have to watch our power usage.
I do know the cheap 240v fan we run only uses 40 watt max. We run on the low setting most of the time.

Hi Pelbo,
Are you really sure with those figures. When i bought our fans earlier this year the highest current rating on all the 6" and 8" models seemed to be only around 1.5A or less???
I agree that you should chuck them if those figures are correct :-)

NO! I am not sure! As I said, my figures are a guess for the power usage of the 12v fans! LOL!
What I do know is that they use far more power than my inverter/240v fan and move far less air and are VERY noisy. We are far better off using the larger 240v fan.
I changed over to the inverter/240v fan on the advice of my auto electrician, who set up my solar / charging system in my van.
Only reason we left the 12v fans in place was to cover the hole in the wall and they make good hat racks.
