THe specifications for my 2001 ZD30 are as follows:
1. The transfer case requires 1.9 litres of Dexron III AT fluid for a dry fill.
If draining and refilling, drain fluid when hot (don't burn your hands wear cloves) and refill to the bottom of the fill plug hole. Make sure the vehicle is level.
Essentially the fluid is replaced because it may have become contaminated with dust and water egress. Nissan recommend changing the fluid every 40,000 kms but I reckon the level and quality of the fluid should be checked and replaced as required especially if you regularly travel on dusty roads and do water crossings.
2. The automatic gear box is another story altogether. It takes about 12 litres of auto transmission to completely dry fill the gear box and torque converter.
However it usually will only drop about 3 to 4 litres when draining from the drain plug. Replace with a similar amount to the amount drained out when doing a routine service.
Refill with Dexron III through the auto transmission dip stick tube. This is a slow and tedious process. Don't overfill the auto transmission
check the level when the vehicle is on level ground.
Specialist auto transmission repair businesses use a fluid evacuation machine to completely drain the automatic fluid.
Many service mechanics, (including, I suspect, local Nissan dealers) don't use the evacuation machine and will charge heaps to drain and replace 3 to 4 litres of fluid. Naturally they will charge heaps of dollars for an "Automatic Transmission Inspection and Full Service".
A mechanic friend of
mine simply drains and tops up the automatic fluid as mentioned above every 20,000 kms or so depending on the road conditions and if towing a heavy van, he recommends checking the colour and smell of the old fluid. If it is discoloured, contaminated or smells of burning don't ignore it but find out why.
Most major oil companies web sites provide lubrication fluid specifications and capacities. Search Google Australia for Mobile, Valvoline and Castrol etc.

Thanks for that information Phil it was a great help. I spoke to an auto tranny expert that I know today and they overfill the sump slightly then disconnect the return line from the cooler and let it run into a bucket with the engine idling while pumping in new fluid at the same time until they have used about 16 litres by which time they reckon all the old fluid has been displaced by new. Sound like a good idea to me as long as you make sure you pump in the new fluid at least at the same rate as the transmission pumps it out. Thanks again. I see the new Patrol TI released at the
