Forumites,
Firstly thanks to all for the practical and helpful hints & suggestions yesterday. Last night I was about to start ripping the sump off, thanks to a valuable reply I found I didn't have access to two secret bolts hidden in the gearbox bell housing, would of been great fun if I had damaged the gasket, then having to start taking the gearbox out.
Anyway, the weep hole I mentioned yesterday is actually the threaded hole for a bolt to hold the auto tranny cooler pipes bracket on, mine being a manual doesn't have one. I checked the threaded hole with a piece of fine TIG wire only to find a slight break through in the threaded section of the hole. This was confirmed when I got a mirror and looked down from the plug ole from the front of the engine.
I've now got a 6.0 X 1.0 X 12 mm bolt to go in the ole, bit of thread tape and that should be it, fixed.
Again thanks to all for the helpful hints and tips, saved me a lot of grief (I hope). I'm glad I've found something rather than just leaving this leak to drip.

Martyn
Glad to hear you got it all sorted out, and didn't end up damaging the sump trying to get it off. Those two hidden bolts are a really bad design feature. I was going to have a look at that hole for you today as we've got a couple of old blown motors behind the workshop so I'm glad to hear you've found the cause of the oil leak. It pays to be persistent.
All the best Jon

Hi John,

Out of interest, I would be greatful if you'd look at the motors to confirm just what fluid is contained by the threaded plug at the front of the sump. As replied to Martyn, the manual shows that the upper sump (structural) is ported to the lower crankcase and has an o-ring seal. I suspect this goes straight through to the block. Just interested to confirm if it goes to an oil gallery or coolant gallery. From Martyn's comments I guess oil but the size of threaded section for plug is pretty large, so I'm curious to know just what it is.

Regards,
Hugh

Hugh,
As you guessed I only found traces of oil and nothing else. The compartment definately wasn't full of oil, no oil came out with the sump full.

Nah, I would have taken the engine and gearbox out and fixed it properly, just as Nissan would have done.
