Hi all, Just let you know I have fitted the Rockcrawler 51 Series steel rims from Procomp Vic with 265/75/16, 10 ply ST tyres to my GU4. My impression of the wheels and fitment are:

Pros:
The increased offset is only 15mm greater than the factory 17” alloys (+10mm).
All tyres are at least 5mm inside wheel arch flares.
There is a good 15mm clearance between the brake caliper and inner rim
Rims are constructed of heavier gauge steel than other brands
Can now enjoy the many benefits of 16” tyres

Cons:
The rims weigh nearly 16kg ie: 2 kg heavier than ROH etc
The steering feels a bit lighter but there is now a very small amount of steering kickback/wobble where previously there was none probably due to the larger unsprung weight of the heavier rim and 10 ply tyre. The whole wheel is 6kg heavier than standard.(ie 39kg)

After driving 200km on rough hilly bitumen roads I am accustomed to the changed steering but the handling is not quite as good as with the 17” alloys. I now understand why manufacturers are fitting 17” wheels for better on road performance at the expense of offroad and remote area practicalities.

Thank you to those who gave advice.

And madCrow the black rims on the silver coloured vehicle do look ok, it has a meaner more serious look about it.

Les,

Good to hear your report of the 16" rims.

I too have a silver GU4, and would love to see a photo of your black rims on the vehicle.

If you can't post a photo here, email me at geofftay@internode.on.net

Squizzy,
Try this photo, my first time at posting photos.

Went to a mates place this morning, he has a rough gravel driveway and noticed that even at low speed there is now some feedback through the steering wheel as well as higher speeds. I previously thought this was caused by the extra unsprung weight but would not expect that to be the cause at low speeds. If it annoys me too much I might have to get a better steering damper.

Les,

I couldn't imagine what the GU4 would look like with black rims, but that is awesome.

You have me thinking now, as mine is also silver.

Truckster, if that is your vehicle, it is also a mean looker.

Thanks fellas,

Geoff.
