Mal, Ozi wrote a lengthy post about this subject before he spat the dummy - would have been late last year, from memory. We have an 80 series factory turbo, and I've thought of this, but where we are it's only something extra to break down. At present, I get my oil "very cheap", so there is little benefit to extend changes. Still do 5K oil change, and 10K filter change.
Think there is an oil outlet near the filter, that you can tap into, then just need to drain into sump. The above mentioned article covered it in some depth.
What sort of oil are you using at present, Mal? Am using
Shell Rimula X 15W/40, as that's want we use on the station. Feel it's been good. Am on second turbo 80 series, and have had no engine probs. In fact no problems except injector pumps - enough said!!! Hooroo...

I've been using a Bypass filter (Frantz) for about 30 years now- I absolutely swear by them not just for saving money but for saving engines. I haven't seen an engine yet that they can't be fitted to.
I change the element regularly (which also involves an oil topup ie: fresh additives etc.) Frantz say don't change the oil at all- I do though, just for piece of mind, about every 10,000- to 15,000 on my Nissan TD42 depending on the usage. Have had a few oil analysis samples done over the years- all good! (It's MUCH easier to change the filter than change the oil- especially away from
home.)
Don't know if it's just a co-incidence but I have NEVER had any "mechanical" problem with any engine fitted with a Frantz in that time. Son's Gemini Diesel, we bought new in 6/81 and 395,000 klms on the clock has always had a frantz but only maybe 10 complete oil changes in that time.(not allowing for the topup when U change the filter.) The body is slowly dying from rust despite the best efforts to stop it, but the engine is absolutely perfect.
PS Also have a frantz as a fuel filter on both diesels- the Gemini has had the injectors done ONCE- (at about 280,000klms)
You've got to see to believe the crap the filter gets from the fuel!!! I've only had to change the Frantz element on the fuel every 5 years or so- looks like dirty mud on top of the filter (wax, metal filings etc etc) then slowly changes to a clean looking honey colour by about half way down. I have the Frantz filters upstream of the factory fuel filter- the Gemini has never had a new factory filter!! (I've looked at it a couple of times but it's still in perfect condition.)

PS
On most cars U tap into where the oil pressure sender is with a TEE and return it to the sump.

Hi David,
I too am interested in fitting a Frantz filter to my 3 litre diesel Hilux and have got some info from their web site. One concern I have is getting the correct
toilet rolls. Can you advise me on what brand you use please. Also there is a kit available from Frantz that allows the filtered oil to be returned to the motor through the oil filler cap, saves having to punch a hole in the sump.
Regards

The best rolls ARE getting a bit harder to get. I'm still using rolls from a V. large box of commercial rolls (Kleenex brand)I bought some years ago. See your local supplier in the yellow pages.
Most of the ones you buy in the local
supermarket are no good as they have made the centre hole too big (cunnung blighters- you get less paper than you used too..)
I'm sure some of the commercial ones are still OK as I often see ones which fit when I stay in hotels (which is for work- the boss pays)The Ausie distributors will also have rolls available- slightly dearerthan from Woolies, but they fit.
I was also out at
Brisbane Air Filter
services yesterday- they sell the specially made rolls for $3 ea. They would probably be the best type to use...

PS
I modify my Frantz oil filter, making it easier to change the element, by putting a small screw tapped in to the top of the can.
B4 changing, I undo the screw which allows air in (and oil to drain out) making far less chance of an oil spill. The screw seals with a small nylon washer. It's about 100 times easier than changing oil!!!!
I also change it more often than Frantz recommend on the Patrol as it's a "big" diesel- I do it about every 2000klms (less often on the Gemini)
If you want any more info email me (I could even send you a photo if required) davnye@hotmail.com
