The guys in the comms shops are really bleep me off!!!
They want to sell me a stainless steel 850mm 6dB. I want a comba mount, that will take a large fibreglass whip as
well as a short stumpy one for nomal city driving.
Do polar have a combo and if so where do I find them?
I also heard the GME 4700 series does the same.........the 2.1m antenna is a little exy($250) are there any better options?
Does the AE4011 at 1.8m ($160) have interchangable whips???

That seems very expensive for the 4700 series. Action Communications sell them for $200. You need the base of a 4700 series to be able to interchange antenna. Have a look at
http://www.gme.net.au/land/ae4700_series.html
The antennas 1-7 will interchange with the 4700 series on this page,

Dolfn, Have been using 2.1M whip (4700) while on the station and for trips to town. Use the 4dB, 1.2M whip on holidays, less drag? This year tried the GME AE409L, which screws into the centre of the 4700 spring base. It seemed okay, and creates less drag than both the bigger whips.
When in Brissy, used the shortest whip, about 450mm long.
With Polars, to get some clearance, used to swap the normal whip, for 6" unity gain one. It didn't wack car parks as much. If I lived in town, would be using Polars. Hooroo...

if you go down the 4700 path just be sure to get the base off a 4706 or 4705 as they have the heavy duty spring yet can still accomodate the smaller whips.
If you tried to fit the big whips to the lighter springs it might look a little strange
