After doing a heap of night driving over the past few weeks I'm looking into upgrading the output of my Hella 4000's. Had a good search through the archives and found a bit of useful info out but was after some 'model specific' stuff.
Q1. Is there a replacement globe available for the Hella 4000 that makes a noticable improvement?
Q2. If so, are there any downsides to them such as durability, wiring requirements etc? I used to use 130W inserts in my 75 series and only got a few months out of them before they failed so went back to standard 100W.
Q3. Is it worth replacing the headlight globes in my 105 series Landcruiser while I'm at it? If so, with what?
Q4. What type of globe is used in the Hella 4000's (H2, H3 etc)?
I'm familar with the Lightforce spotties, prefer to stick with the Hella's if possible.
Thanks in advance.
Cheers

Hi,
the HID conversion is 35 wats each at globe and the ballast consumes another 7w=42 watts per bulb. The output of hid (xenon gas discharge) is similar number of lumens (amount of light) as a 100 w halogen bulb. The colour is different on hid (more white) and will help you see further. The hid also runs much much cooler. You can almost touch it, but dont do it as the voltage can be up to 35000 v.
Putting 130 watt bulbs in any spotlight can often result in less lumens due to voltage drop due to increase in resistance from higher current draw. You need to make sure your wiring is not dropping voltage under load.
Test it with light on from the battery to the positive terminal at bulb. You should drop less then 0.5 v, and less is better.
The best (economical) thing to do is get an additional set of spotlights if you dont have enough light.
cheers
