Hi all, we are contemplating updating from our 97 Rodeo 2.8 Td to a brand new 3.0 TD Hilux Extra Cab - just wondering what they are like off road and towing. The rodeo has been fabulous but slow as a wet week especially towing. Almost need to go into low range to pull a trailer up
hill. Was hoping the Hilux would be a bit more capable. Is anyone experiencing any problems with the 3.0 motor like the nissans seem to have?

There is a comparason between the hilux and the navara in the march(?) edition of 4x4 australia mag. They did tests with passing times, towing ect. was an interesting read, but as suspected the nissan was given the thumbs up. Might be worth a look.
Cheers Gerard

test drive and enjoy.

Hi Dave, some nice picks from your Cape trip in your rig profile.
I know you have mentioned it before, but what sort of winch have you fitted to the 'Lux?

Hi Norm, the winch is a 9000lb mile marker. Great trip, always love looking at the
pic, great memories.

I have the Extra Cab Hilux and am very happy. Pront springs make it good on the road. Only criticisms are that they are an unattractive car, irrelevant point really, and quite pricey. Great on the road, but need to get used to the coiled spring effect of a turbo. You can be speeding too often over hills and out of corners. Basically a great vehicle.

Had my Dual Cab TD for just over 12 months. Have done about 25,000KM so far. Power is great. Drives like a petrol. On road it is a great vehicle. Until we put bigger and more aggressive rubber on, I was surprised at the lack of road noise.
Off road it is quite capable, but is of course limited by the IFS and rear spring set up, which limit wheel articulation for the real serious stuff. But that is true of all similar vehicles. We do a fair bit of off roading with the 4WD Club, but avoid the trips rated Hard and Extreme. The 'Lux simply can not do them and I don't want to risk damage trying.
We have towed our CT (1,500KG when fully loaded) over about 6,000KM so far, including two trips to Fraser Island. It handles the load very
well. Only really notice the extra load when taking off up
hill, or if you get stuck behind a truck and lose your revs going up
hill.
When new and unloaded, we got 9.5 to 10 Lt per 100KM. Always carry a fair load now, and when fully loaded and towing we get 13.5 to 14 Lt per 100KM. When towing, we cruise at 90 to 95 KPH and rarely go into 5th.
If you plan on doing any real off roading, you will want to remove the side steps and rear steps and fit an ARB (not Toyota) bull bar to improve ramp over, approach and departure angles.
Hope this helps.
