Can any reader recommend a good camping ground close into
Darwin. I will only be staying a few days to see some old mates who live there, hence I am reluctant to travel any great klm's on a daily basis.

We stayed at Howard Springs also (last Sept)and OK spot-- but we were after the crowd.
Need to book if you are going up June>August (or so we were told).
30 minutes to "town"
Shade spot if you are lucky.
Bit noisy if too close to road but far enough off highway not to get that noise.
10 minutes from Palmerston which has good shopping centre.

I assume you mean "free camping" as opposed to paying for a caravan park or
camp ground.
There really isn't anywhere near
Darwin (1 hr drive or so) that you don't have to a pay unless you head into the bush and find a spot.
All the replies so far have been caravan parks....
How far away from
Darwin where you thinking?

Wizard,
No mate, Im prepared to pay. The closer to
Darwin city the better. Last thng I need is a million dollar cab fare, after a night on the turps with my old mates who currently live there.

The closest parks to the city are near the airport...Lee Point is a top park...has lots of ensuite sites for the same price as powered sites...power costs about $1 a day extra but you have the convenience of your own loo and shower right along side of you...we had 17 days there last year and loved it ...heat and all...cheers
