I was hoping someone maybe able to help with my performance problem. I have recently bought a modified dual cab 80 series 1997 ute, and over the last 2 months its performance has decreased on highway especially up hills and around town - it's like its lost a whole gear. It has done 150k and the injectors have not been done yet, would they be due? I have checked my snorkle and it is clear and my air filter is ok. I have also replaced the fuel filter and dropped fuel out of both tanks and they were clean. I bought some of the C.E.M Flushing Oil Concentrate and ran it through my engine proir to its last oil change and have been using CEM cleanpower in the fuel for the last 600kms and no noticiable effect. I was maybe thinking pump timing (hopefully not the pump itself) - any thoughts????

Gearbox dramas:
It also has a clicky grinding noise when at idle which dissapears when the clutch is depressed?? The most annoying thing is its whining noise when in 1st, 2nd and slightly 3rd when acelerating and especially decelerating, say around a corner at a certain rev range (low). I don't have a tacho so I can't specify. It sounds nasty but a mechanic said nothing to worry about, just old parts on new. It also hops & shudders when taking off in 1st and especially reverse and especially under load, one mechanic said its just the cruisers and another said a pitted part?? in the gearbox that is gripping.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated... - this ExplorOz forum is awesome!!!

Could it have been fixed up just to run long enough to sell??

Have you had it serviced, and checked by NRMA/RACV etc? or a reputable 4wd shop?????

Another mechanic " dont worry about it mate!" I HATE THAT!!!!

But it could be old on new if the job was half done.

Is it blowing black smoke when you accellerate? Then injectors. Take it to a diesel specialist and get an opinion, then go to another. Sound like you can't leave it like it is. Belts and pulleys tight? Mountings all solid underneath? Clutch okay? I'm no mechanic.... I know the feeling good luck. Royce

royce, no black smoke - thats the strange thing, so I thought it may not be the injectors. I have taken it to 2 diesel specialists and they both want to replace the injectors and then have a look at other things if injectors don't fix the problem, but why do injectors if thats not the problem? I am having the pump timing checked today and we'll see if thats the problem. As for belts and pulleys and have not checked, but recently I replaced the A/C belt and thought I may have tightened it up too much, but I don't know if that would effect the performance? And again I have not checked mountings underneith. Either the clutch and/or the gearbox is not okay but do you think this would effect its performance?

Thanks for your input

hi, sounds like clutch shudder (usually worse in reverse). The noise in the box sounds like the rollover in the idler gear pretty normal every 80 series I've owned has done it (some louder than others)
The whine sounds like the preload in the rear diff.

Hope that helps.

Thanks tour boy, having the mechanic check the pump timing and have a look at the gearbox today so we'll see how it goes

Justin,
I forgot to mention the quickest way to tell if its the rollover inthe box, is to idle along in 1st gear on level ground and it will growl and snarl (for want of a better description). Most of the time it's more of an annoyance than a problem.
I know of an ex SRA 80 series that has done about 600,000km, never been touched, only serviced every 50,000km if its lucky and the gearbox sounds like a chain driven tractor!!
If yours doesn't sound that bad, don't stress too much. I wouldn't.

Hope you get some piece of mind from your mechanic.
