FREEZER
Has anyone got any experience with the down under fridge freezers. I am looking at getting a fridge freezer. Was heading down engel track and still really like them, but i seen the Downunder and it looks very robust, much like there eskies. 45mm insulation injected with refridgeration foam using the same compressor as waeco uses. The one i seen was $850 for a 50L (on sale) compared to $1190 for engel.
They use on average 0.8amps for 5deg.
1.8amp Freezer for -18deg
Any practical experience with these would be great
Freezer.(pardon the pun)

Evening Feezer,
We bought one last year and have used it a few times over the xmas period. It has been a fantastic unit and I wouldnt hesitate at recomending them to anyone else.
Very happy with it.
Just our view,
Boo.

Boo
is yours a cream colour with stainless steal inside.
Do you use it as a fridge or freezer. I nearly walked out of the place with it. With the good compressor (proven performer) and better insulation than other fridges and the 5 year warranty, it is a pretty good buy.

Good compressor as long as it's feed with the full load. This compressor doesn't like low voltages and will be damaged by such. The Engel swing compressor just keeps swinging with no harm done at 10 volts...not good for the battery though.

Freezer,
Yes its the cream coloured one, 70lt, we've been using it as a freezer as we also have a 50lt chescold which we use as a fridge. Has no trouble at all maintaining frozen state in 40+ degree weather.
We bought ours at a 4x4 show late last year for $1199 including an insulated bag.

Yeah they've got to have voltage protection and that's another source of problems, get a pin prick of fly dung on a connector and that's it...wont work.

Hi Freezer,
Yes Ruey Shing make the fridges and supply then to Downunder who rebadge them.
I have visited the factory where they are made in Taiwan they are built to last, this campany also make industrial fridges for over 30 years and supply Subway stores worldwide with refrigeration thay are the biggest importer and distributor of Danfoss compressors in Taiwan.

When running they draw approx 3.4 amps i did
test one a while back with temp set at 5c and ambient at 32c with 4litres of water inside it used 16ah pretty good !! Waeco was 18.6ah and Engel 26ah.
My retail price is $1000 so if you can get one for $850 go for it thats a bargain!!
Where are you located?

i have used my 50 litre model in the gulf in the middle of summer. in temps that any fridge could be expected to struggle, i had to turn it down because the food and beer cans kept freezing up. i'm easily dissapointed with inferior products, but delighted with excellent performers, buy one

Was yours the cream one mate.(repco sell them) I have noticed reading back over old posts that some people are confusing the "down under" for the "Evacool downunder". It is really hard to make a desision on whether to get it as i am also very dissapointed for a bad purchase, especially when it costs $850(and that is considerd cheap) They are the same unit as the Reefer Traveller, just badged different. In a 4Wd monthly
test on a heap of fridges the reefer was by far and away the worst performer re. power consumption. I am not sure whether this is the same fridge or what, or even if it is a reliable
test, but in has pulled the reigns on me a tad.
Cheers

yep, cream from repco, 900 bucks, i'm a bit wary of the 70 litre version as it looks too hard to access the contents at the bottom of it...$850 for a 50 litre that no one bags , everybody praises with a 5 yr warranty vs 1000 bucks for a 40 litre

Try "Rods Country" Camping Gear 0418 423 610 he sells the Ruey Shing and is in
Wollongong area but he travells to most 4x4 camping and caravan shows throughout NSW Qld Vic and SA.
I think his price is competitive.
