I Have purchased Nissan Patrol 4.2 turbo diesel trying to improve performance and economy, any info on either running on gas/diesel blend (any motor damage) or fitting a 3inch exhaust system and booting up turbo. Any idea of % power improvements and economy?

He didnt mention that he wanted reliability but we can only assume he does.... My advice is stick with the 4.2 and cop the fuel bill :0)

Farmer, lots of info in the archives, try a search first, then maybe come back with specific questions, save reinventing the wheel.

Searched thru them John for an hour or so and gave up - hence my questions - can't be any more specific. Great follow-ups with answers which is really appreciated. Reinventing the wheel WHAT A THOUGHT!!!

Steve - I also have the 4.2. Very simple answer :
The right foot is directly connected to the fuel tank.
Keep speed under 100 and drive it for the reliable truck it is.
Consumption around 12l per 100klm. With 1.4t camper - 16l per 100 klms.
Push it to 100 and over, and economy suffers. My experience.

I'd have to agree with your comments Keith. That cover the economy part of the question.

As for power improvement......well, it depends a fair bit on the thickness of your wallet or the available limit on your credit card.

A good tune up with injectors been properly set-up (they are crap when they leave the factory) and fuel pump adjusted etc.

After that, I fitted a 3" mandrel bent exhaust system (but I agree with something Truckster has said in the past......that it doesn't really need to be "mandrel-bent"....a normal, capstan-bent jobbie would work just as well on one of these motors.

Then you can go for either a turbo re-bore upgrade (see MTQ for this) or, as I have done, do a total change-over of the turbo for a Schwitzer (see Denco, Wagga, NSW for this).

Then you could whack on an "air to water" intercooler (see Denco for this too).

I don't know of anybody who has fitted the gas-injection to a Patrol, but it apparently works very well on blandcruisers.

Cheers

Roachie

Farmer, Roachie is withholding the 'gold info'on this one.

He didn't mention he also has/uses/used the following did he:

Shoo - Roo Extra 5Kph (never mentions it)
Fitch In trial stage
Hi-drones Extra 5Kph (but it's a secret)
Amsoil Who knows - hasn't reported in ages
Mega Rock/mud Flap Extra 2HP from aerodynamic effects
Radiatus Giaganticus Extra 10Hp from extra cooling
Wetter Water Secret weapon - extra 10Kph
50 million in cabin switches No one is too sue about these
10 battery isolators Ah! extra 5Hp for just having them
Loud noise horns Extra 6KP100L as he has road to himself

3 compressors Energy savers - extra 1 Hp

Blue lights. Extra 10Hp - go off with a bang and are never heard of again.

Turbo mods like no one has ever heard of Jury still out.

Do what everyone else suggested - use it for what it is and enjoy paying for it.

Hi Steve,

I also have a 4.2 T Patrol and have done many modifications to improve performance (not too improve economy though). I now run at about 90kw at the rear wheels as opposed to the standard 65kw. The guys at MTQ toowoomba have done the last increase in power and I have been happy with thier efforts, although I am sure their is other mobs offering the same power-ups. My uncle had his 4.2 T Patrol revved up by MTQ also and is running 96kw, so there is a bit of variance to the outcome of thier work but they would be a good starting point.
One thing I will suggest is to do your homework on whoever you decide to let play around with your truck as these things tend to run hot when being pushed in standard form and tickling them up does not help this.
In essence a 30 - 40% increase in power and torque is not out of the question, if you think you could get away with less than this increase then start with the 3" exhaust and dump pipe at the back of the turbo. This will give a noticable increase, but if you decide to go for the extra neddies then the exhaust modification will need to be done anyway for futher enhancements. If you are in Brissy and would like to know more then supply me with an email address and I will arrange to catch up and maybe even let you have a drive of my truck to see the difference. This is subject to how much of a ratbag you are of course Hahahaha.
Best of luck Trevor.

Motsons of Brisbane do a power up for the Nissan 4.2rd's.

www.motsons.com.au

I had mine done with 30% increase in power and torque but no better fuel economy. It's done more than 120,000 now since power up and is still just as good today. All that's been done since is the tappets as per service requirements etc.
You cannot use the gas diesel blend as these vehicles are indirect injection, I believe that you must have direct injection for the gas bit.

Stay at the legal limits and the truck will perform great with to my mind reasonable economy.

Regards Dodg.

I used to have a handle on life, but it broke.

Cheers Dodg.

Farmer

I have some relatives that own a few very respected diesel injection and fuel pump etc mechanical shops. They do work for any diesel and alot of diagnostics as well. The 4.2's they have worked on are unbeliable, the extra power and economy they can get is great and worth the bucks. They believe that they have perfected the injection and fuel pump supply for the 4.2s, if you like let me know and i will pass on the info and you can enquire for yourself.

Sorry Trevor forget about the brissy people sometimes. Highway diesel is just down the road from ARB southside, i had my 80 series fuel pump and injectors worked on and was amazed at the difference its great. If however you have a patrol, you are in luck as they can get those motors absolutley singing, the owner of the company Steve is vey respected in the diesel industry and happy to give advice. Hope all goes well with your truck.

Cheers

Remove top cover off aneroid valve(four screws) and rotate diaphragm clockwise to increase fuel. Make sure you mark the diaphragm's original position before you start playing with it (don't go further than 90 degrees). Also adjust screw in on aneroid top cover to increase fuel down low. You will be surprised how your fuel economy will decrease and power increase. If you are unsure about this get a diesel shop to do it, and maybe adjust your injection timing if needed. Fit an EGT to monitor your exhaust temp so as not to create a meltdown.

Farmer,
MTQ have agencies in Sydney, West End Diesel in Wetheril park I think. They are good but want to rebuild your pump $$$$, OK if its older but unecesary if new.
I had mine done in Toowoomba and very impressed, will definitely go back next vehicle. Worth the drive.
My main advice is buy a package not just exhaust etc etc. I spent money on magic tune ups and then pump and injector rebuilds and all wasted.
MTQ do turbo internals, tune and exhaust and together it really works, to the mark of 30% increase in both pwr and torque with economy up too.
Done 180'000km now still going well

You wont do much better than West End Diesel.

They got ~120kw at wheels on the Christies TD42 Patrol if I remember right.

Wouldn't mind knowing if anyone has gone the gas injection route on this engine also. Diesel Gas Australia have come to market with a safe looking system with map sensor et all- anyone with real world results though???

Farmer, JR's reply covers most of what I have done to my 4.2 TD (Nissan), have also just fitted an I/C, mainly to help fuel economy. Still doing figures atm. Any other questions, please ask, only too happy to answer.
