This is a transport stage so we are only interested in the time taken.
What is the quickest way from Coonabarabran to
Ballina.
If things go to plan we should be leaving Coona about 2pm. I know this will put us into
Ballina quite late but it's a "get to see the relies" thing.
Also does anyone know if the road from Coonamble to Wee Waa via Pilliga is sealed or not.
Thanks in anticipation.

Duncs,
Looks like Coonabarabran, Gunnedah,
Tamworth,
Tenterfield, Casino then
Ballina.
670ks over 8 hours 43 mins according to Travelmate
Travelmate
Don't know about road surface between Coonamble and Wee Waa via Pilliga but since Travelmate estimates 1hr 57mins for 144ks I'd suggest it has a few opportunities for the unwary :))))))

Hmm roughly same average speed for both trips. Avg 77km/hr compared to 74km/hr. The longer journey includes more slow downs for towns etc.
The maps I have suggest a mixture of sealed/unsealed road for the Coonamble/Wee Waa via Pilliga route.

Duncs,
Pilliga may be a bit of a worry at the moment

Thanks gramps,
I use Travelmate a fair bit but I think it has been tampered with. The estimated travel times have become a bit longer since I first looked at the site. It now gives
Broken Hill to
Cobar as a 5h 09min trip. Even if you only do 100km/h it should only take 4.5hours, at 110 which is the speed limit it takes about 4.
It is still a useful guide but the times seem less accutate than they once were.
I was not aware of the fires. I will have to monitor that situation as it may
well influence the route.

Duncs,
I looked at whereis.com.au as
well but it gave the trip as 675Ks and 11hrs 30mins !!!!!!! I think political correctness has raised it's head again.

whereis.com gave the trip from
Broken Hill to
Ballina as 27 hours at an average speed of 56km/h.
Just a tad conservative I think.

I too have noticed that travelmate has been fiddled with, it used to give the most direct route with least stops/towns etc now it takes really weird routes and can stick to the main roads ignoring all local roads.
One example I found with the same stupid route was from
Canberra to Brindabella, it takes you around in a huge circle rather than go straight over through Picadilly Circus.
Cotter Dam to Brindabella does the same thing.
As I'm in
Sydney I've also found that it now goes out of its way to steer you onto the toll roads, funny that.
