Boy dead, twin critical in crash

December 26, 2005

A 12-YEAR-OLD boy died and four people were injured in a Christmas Day outing turned tragedy for a Sydney family.

The child died at the scene after the family's four-wheel drive ran off the M7 motorway at Cecil Park, in Sydney's west, about 10.30pm (AEDT) yesterday.

The vehicle hit an embankment and rolled 30 metres before landing on its roof on Elizabeth Drive.

It was NSW's first road fatality for the Christmas period, bringing the national holiday toll to 12.

Four relatives, including the victim's twin brother, were trapped for up to an hour before being released from the wreckage.

The twin brother was taken to Liverpool hospital in a critical condition with multiple injuries.

He was later transferred to The Children's Hospital at Westmead, where his 14-year-old sister is in a stable condition.

The 37-year-old mother, from Prestons, who was driving the vehicle, and a 16-year-old female cousin are in a stable condition at Liverpool Hospital.

All lanes on the M7 and Elizabeth Drive have reopened after being closed to traffic for several hours.

The accident follows the death of two women yesterday after their car hit a traffic light and smashed into a power pole in the Brisbane suburb of Underwood.

Five deaths so far have been reported on Queensland roads, three in South Australia and two in Western Australia.

One person has died in Victoria and one in NSW.

I'm right there with the explorer on this one why put this info on a public forum?I saw the accident on the news tonight and that was enough for me! All I can say is thank god they were in a Landcruiser/4wd,otherwise there may have been more deceased in this vehicle.

That is right. Been open just over a week. I have not travelled it yet, so can't throw any light on the accident scene.

A tragic event, but I can't work out why it had to be a "4WD Tragedy". I am sure the other states victims were not all in 4WDs, but they were not reported as "Sedan Tragedy", "Ute Tragedy" or whatever ....

Less that a week old and already claimed a young life - Perhaps its not on topic for this webpage as someone suggested above - but the death of a child is a sad thing and should not be dismissed as "just another day"

I have traveled this road a few times already in one week period and its brilliant - linking 2 freeeways ( m4 m5 ) original plans were to also link up to the f3 but that was before one of the pollies sold the coridore of land that was set aside for it. I am happy to use this orad for now , as its free - but i wonder if i will use it as much once they strat to charge and i get my first statement from my ETag telling me how much it has cost me ....

Wasnt trying to suggest children dying (or anyone for that matter) should be dismissed as "just another day". I have no problem with general discussions on the dangers of driving, bad roads, mis-reporting of accidents emphasising 4WD's etc – However I see no need to cut and paste news reports from other websites to this forum, detailing death/accidents as they happen - just my opinion.

When you consider the fact that 4x4s now make up about 1/3 of all vehicles on the road and are involved in far less that 1/3 of serious accidents, it would seem being in a 4x4 actually make you safer.

Now if you were driving or travelling in a WRX, then I’d be worried

As said before with more and more people owning 4wds there are going to be more accidents involving 4wds, just read this on ABC News, scary and a lot of people in 4wds or sedans carry LPG bottles when travelling.

Teenager in hospital after car explosion
A teenage girl has been rushed to hospital after the four-wheel drive vehicle she was in exploded at Woodend, north of Melbourne.

The 16-year-old has been taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital with burns to her face and arms, while others in the car received minor burns.

The explosion is believed to have been caused by a leak in an LPG bottle in the back of the car.

The incident happened on the Calder Freeway at about 12:30pm AEDT

What a shame we are becoming our own worst enemies and providing the like of Harold Scruby with more ammunition.
Yesterday the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service attended a total of 12 motor vehicle accidents in the 24 hour Christmas Day period (much less than a normal day!). None were reported as involving a 4wd (they may have in some cases, but QFRS don't make a big deal of the type of vehicle involved).
I would like to congratulate the 4wd drivers who were on the road yesterday and were therefore NOT involved in an accident, unlike the (at least) 12 motor car drivers who were.
Let's keep things in perspective!!!

Harold has a 'use by' date. I think people are getting a bit sick of his extreme stuff. People do get a bit tired of people who run around with the "End of the World" placards.

Now for a bit of good news, I travelled a fair bit over the last two weeks and found that many drivers had backed off from driving at the speed limit at all times.

It was refreshing to see drivers drop the speed for a bit of wet road too.

Yes, there were a few dills who did the usual - frequent lane changing, following too closely and speeding - but they seemed to be fewer than normal.

Maybe the message is sinking in!

Here in the ACT we have Summernats building up, we already seem to have quite a few interstate cars arriving and the rev heads around here are coming out of the woodwork.

On a trip to the shops yesterday I was treated to 3 burnouts, fun for some but when one is in traffic at an intersection it's a worry.

Here's the disclaimer I'm not saying that all car enthusiasts are meat heads just that the summernats seems to attract the ones with a mental deficiency.

Safe new year to all
