Fuel economy/LPG tuning on GQ Patrol

I've had my GQ for a month now, and at last all the mods are done and it's ready for its first Grand Adventure in the forests around Coffs Harbour next week. Until now, it's just been used around town, but I've done some preliminary fuel consumption figures.

It has the 4.2L engine, 5-speed manual box, it's a 12/88 model, and it came with a BRC system with a 90l tank. I have no idea who fitted it, but they seem to have done a very professional job.

I did a measurement a couple of weeks ago and I ended up with a figure of 3.9 km/l. Hmmm. The 60 series LandCruiser I had gave me a consistent 5 to 5.5 km/l on LPG or petrol. I know the Patrol has a bigger engine, but surely 200cc extra can't be responsible for giving me 25% more fuel consumption. I was kind of expecting to get a highway touring range of 400 to 450 km on a tank, but I get the same range as the LandCruiser (300-340km) with 50% more fuel in the back. Not good.

I had a look at the timing, and it was sitting at 15°BTDC at 700RPM. The dwell angle was spot on at 40°. I know the burn characteristics of LPG and petrol are different, but I also remember that I had the LandCruiser tuned to the petrol specs and it ran just fine on either fuel, so I reset the timing on the Patrol to what the petrol specs said, namely 10°TDC at 650RPM.

It's too early to clearly tell what effect this has had, but a first run suggests a figure of only 3.3 km/l. Ooops.

I don't have any consumption figures for petrol running yet as that will show on the trip up north next week, but I've read that you can expect around 4.5 km/l for this engine. It'd be nice if I got that. Time will tell.

So my questions are:

1) What should you expect to see, consumption-wise, for this engine on both fuels?

2) How do you adjust the gas flow rate out of the reducer? I dimly remember when I replaced the Landirenzo gas reducer on the LandCruiser a couple of years ago, the manual said to run the engine to around 3000RPM and then reduce the gas flow adjuster screw until the revs just started to drop, then back off the screw by half a turn. Problem is, I can't find the manual from when I did it the first time, and I'm not sure if that's the right procedure, although it sounds likely.

Apart from the poor fuel consumption, I'm very happy with my "new" GQ. The engine runs like a watch and absolutely trounces over the 60 series I had for power and smooth running. The only thing is it drinks like a V12.

First of.. Merry Xmas and Happy New Year.

Second.. I have a 94 model GQ with the 4.2 EFI engine with the gas conversion . Unfortunotly I only get around 300k, 320k if I keep the speed down and get a good tail wind, ..out of the 90l tank wich is roughly the same as your 3.3k/l, I have a 90 l petrol tank and a 90l usable gas tank (about the 120l total) I get exactly the same consumption from either gas or petrol (dam near to the kilometre) and dont find any noticable power differrence between the two either.
Cant help with the timing or adjustment bit as I'm not that clued up on it (never looked) I get the beast tuned when it runs a bit off.
As for any other probs, mines been great apart from a stuffed fuel pump 6 months ago.. as you said these things run like a dream and simply keep on doin it as long as you can afford the fuel for the thirsty little beggers. But I find its still half the cost to run it on gas than it is to run my wifes Fairmont on petrol, with the result the beast tends to cop a flogging..

There's gotta be something wrong when you only get 3.3 km/l out of ANYTHING. I'm thinking that maybe the gas flow rate isn't quite right so it's an idea to adjust it for optimum and see how it goes. What I *do* know is that I'll be taking the timing light up north with me in case I really do have to set it back to 15ºBTDC again.

I can't believe it's normal for a Patrol to suck fuel like this - I must be missing something somewhere. The only thing that the LandCruiser had different was a set of extractors - I've picked up a set for the Patrol and will fit them in a few weeks from now and see just how much of a difference, if any, they make.

My gas tank holds 115 usable and gets me 450 in the country.So thats pretty close to 4km/l. Best i have ever got is 5 but you will find most GQ's will do beween 3 and 4. I am happy with the $ per 100kms. A guy at work has a 60 on gas and he gets 290km out of 80lt????

I guess I've got to get used to that - after getting between 5 and 5.5 km/l out of the 60 series, which was indestructible but gutless, I was expecting to get around 5 out of the Patrol.

I think I'll definitely be fitting those headers next month.

dont waste your money on extractors.. they do stuff all.
Save your coin for a turbo, TB's take to turbos very well with some comp dudes gettin 20psi and 200kw+

The only way to make its correct is to get it dyno tuned then you know what your getting is all your going to get .But be warned with BRC your economy and idle quality will change anyway as BRC is crap . Timing on gas should be 12-15deg initial with a total timing figure on no more then 32 deg with vac ad disconnected when checking . Anymore total timing can result in detotnation which you may not here at high end of rev range .
My GQ would get 330-340 90ltrs and the mixtures were spot on and it had elect ignition...

Well I've currently got it set to the petrol value of 10ºBTDC so I'll see what the consumption is like after a few tanks this week out in the country. I'm taking my timing light and engine meter just in case I need to start fiddling settings out in the field.

Not Excessive.

My oldies have an 88 GQ patrol carby 4.2. It is an absolute pig on fuel. We took it up to rainbow beach one christmas. Half hour soft sand driving and remainder mostly highway returned something like 278km to 75l petrol. Works out to be 27l/100km. They are just horrendous on petrol so i think your gas figure is probably right. I have a 94 80 series gas/petrol. Makes mine look like a miser!
I shudder to think how much petrol has been burnt in the old GQ as it has done 400000 km now.

I'm going to have to get used to this sort of fuel consumption after the 60 series! On the way from Sydney to Coffs Harbour I'm getting a consistent 4.12 - 4.16 km/l on LPG, fully laden, and from what you're all telling me I'm going gangbusters!

Hmmm.... that 6.5l Chevy V8 diesel conversion is starting to look better every day......

Just got back from our couple of weeks up the far north coast, including a run to Brisbane. I've had the timing at 10°BTDC and I've readjusted the gas flow rate using the 3000RPM trick - leaned it out a bit. Since leaving on Boxing Day, the truck's done 3810km on this trip and returned a fuel consumption figure of 4.43 km/l for highway driving, fully laden. I don't think I can complain about that. Out of a 90l tank, my cruising range is a little over 400km.
