4x4 Camper/caravan

I have a similar problem.
The short answer is ,I think, called a "Motel" whatever that is!!

There are plenty of Off road and/or Poptops that would solve your problem but some of them are restricted as to where you can tow them (Too long,high or wide for many tracks)

Just quickly - the other half should get up to speed with how fast you can enter the "fold-over"type camper trailer - If all you want to do is have a sleep, your head could be on the pillow in under 5 minutes....the bonus is that in this type of trailer, it can go anywhere that the car can go.

Yep I know the prob. My Lady is a Hilton camper but fell in love with the Trackabout Safari off road campertrailer. Great product and I can 2 peg it in under 5 on my own - that is if you just want to kip for the night. The other options take about 15mins but that's not a prob. The kitchen folds out from the back and your cookin' in about 5 mins as well.

Cost about $11,000 plus all the bits you want to carry to make life easy for the missus. (Makes a great car fridge - holds about 25 cartons (30 packs and about 15 chateaux de cardboards as well)

All up including insurance about $13,000.

I have had a Tvan for a year now and it is great, goes any where my 100 series TD can pull it, 750 kg nude has better suspension than IFS cruiser, very comfortable, fast set up and the wife loves it.

My 'other ½' also no longer wanted to erect a tent, blow up an airbed, pull our luggage off the back of the Ute to roll out the swag, or wind up the little camper van and slide out the beds. We had fun camping with all of the above in our youth - none of them much fun when it rained. Aging backs and knees dictated more comfort.

Considered motor homes v caravan (always thought we would end up with an 4wd motor home) but comfy tow vehicle and caravan won in the end. Looked at a variety of caravans, including so called off-roaders which state suitable for occasional trips on gravel roads, not rough ones (read the fine print in their brochures). Once he saw and looked underneath (but not inside) a Bushtracker we met in the Karajini a couple of years ago, he insisted it was a Bushtracker or nothing. Bought 2nd (rather 3rd or 4th hand) privately from Qld and we are delighted with it.

What is your tow vehicle? Any full sized sturdy caravan needs a more than a 'city 4wd' as a tow vehicle. Generally people who have Kedron or Phoenix off-road caravans have given good reports. It seems that the tough stuff is generally all made in Qld.

As the chief cook and navigator, i love being able to pull of the road and we have our instant home. No more winding up or blowing up, or watching dark clouds with fear and trepidation. It also depends on how long your trips will be - our previous camping trips were only short, so we didn't need much in the way of clothes or supplies. Now we have plenty of room for clothes to meet varying climates, and supplies to last us for weeks in the outback. This one is also mosquito proof - a real bonus over previous rigs.

I wanted an off road camper I could operate alone (female). I bought a Bushranger All Terrain. Very compact. Like a Kimberly, cheaper. Smaller, higher, lighter. I can pull up and be in bed in 5 minutes. Taken it down Billy Goats Bluff track, into Wonnangatta, etc. Love it! Pull it with a Hilux.

Interesting comments. Me and my lovely wife will keep looking. We will let you know how we go. I am keen on the Tvan she likes the Jurgen Explorer or simular. We hope to get to a couple of caravan expo's (any suggestions on which is the best)
