Hi sparra,
you can only "load" the Hema GDT maps that Magellan (NextDestination) sell in addition to DAST.

If you want the GDT map (images) that usually cost about $60-70 on CD, you will need a mapping program like Oziexplorer running on a laptop(or other mobile computing platform), to use them in a moving vehicle!

Check out the GPSOz comparison page.

Note that DAST topo (the latest version) has better maps than the original version!

Cheers.

Meridians are not obsolete(in the ture sense of the term) and still supported by Magellan.
It seems to me though, that with every new model from Magellan, you get less features!

Meridans have their place in the market, and are now selling at very reasonable prices :))

cheers.

Depending on use (I suspect sparra is not one to hike for days though!!) the rechargable lithium battery in the explorist can be a limitation!
BUT!! ExploristXL is the model to go for.....nice big screen :)

Hi Sparra,

I wouldn't buy one in Australia. Get it from the USA and load the basemap here. Not hard and some people on here may be able to help procure the file required.

I know, I know - in advance to all the people re supporting local business, I've heard it all before.

I got TWO Meridian Golds from a guy I deal with in California (I've bought about 6 off him now - 4 golds, a colour & a platinum) a month or so ago and TWO windscreen mounts, and TWO power data cables. Total cost was about $820 landed here inc freight to my door in 6 days from order. Compare that to the unit only costs here for only one unit with no accessories.

And before anyone gripes about no warranty if you read the fine print the Magellan Warranty is an international one.

And they fixed the backlight on my US purchased unit without question, just asked me if I wanted the Aust basemap uploaded for a meagre $300 at the same time, and offer which I politely declined.

Dave
