not a bad vehicle . But in saying that you really need to keep them up to scratch, so make sure the one you buy has been in the right hands before you .

To be totally honest with you, don't buy one the problems are endless.
I had one customer who bought one brand new it lasted 48km's and it blew the motor.yes that's right just 48km's.i could give the phone numbers of at least 6 previous disco owners who will tell you the same thing.
I realise i will upset a lot of disco owners out there but so be it.

Hi Maxtor - I owned one. Bought it new in 99. IFF they could make them reliable , they would be one of the best 4WD on the face of this earth. But - SO many parts fail, both small and large. Final straw was big ends chewing through chemically hardened crank shaft - cost me a complete engine rebuild at 120k.
I cut my losses after 4 years , and bought a 1999 4.2 TD patrol.
Not a flame - just personal heart-ache (and expensive) experience.
Have 2 friends with them - similar reliability and cost issues.

Consider a Patrol or a Cruiser, don't want to offend the Landrover Royalty out there but honestly look at another make.

Hi Maxtor,

Don't let the doomsayers put you off. All brands can and do have expensive failures. Find a good Discovery and it can be a delight to own, although ALL Land Rovers are a bit quirky from time to time! Bought our '97 with 89,000kms in 2001 - now has 204,000 km and has NEVER let us down or been off the road, except for booked-in work. It's taken us to Cape York, Simpson Desert, all around Central Oz and northern OZ and towed our 'vans for perhaps 60-70,000km in that time.

That said, '95 was about the changeover from the earlier 200Tdi to the 300Tdi series and the early 300's had some issues which were corrected over the years. If you want to send me a PM with the complete VIN from your proposed purchase, I may be able to supply relevant Technical Bulletins and other info. - no charge.

Happy Christmas,
Ian

Maxtor,

Have you owned and british built machinery before ?? If not then a land rover might not be the vehicle for you.

Do you like getting your hands dirty and doing some of the required on going maintainence yourself ?? (Or have a big wallet to get someone else to do it).
I have owned from new, a '93 200 Tdi disco and it has been all over Australia, but you have to treat them right for them to treat you right.

Cheers

Thanks for the feedback, looks like a may give it a big miss, I'm a mechanic by trade but the last thing I want is to spend my weekends fixing the thing.

I can never quite understand how someone can drive a car for 48km and blow and engine or destroy a diff.......etc!!
Makes you wonder about driving styles? :))

My '79 Rangie has done it's 500,000'th km some time back. The engine now leaks oil way too much for any use (and I'm looking for a cheap Disco) but the 'abuse' it had recieved justifies this condition!

each to their own!

Sure a window winder handle may break or the dashboard trim may peel, but I doubt that's really a reliability issue?

I'd trust an LR product any day!..........now, about those 3lt turbo deisel Nissans!!......... :))
