Well not as exciting as I thought it might be but then again he was pretty coy about telling me details so maybe there were some moments left out.

For those that followed the first post my clueless friend borrowed his dad's well fitted out (dual battery, 60L engel, shelves etc) 3.0L v6 Paj and took it to Moreton for a few days camping with a Honda CRV (he thought was a "huge kick arse 4WD").

In short, the Engel stopped working after day 2 and he didn't know why.

The Paj never got bogged but the CRV got bogged twice getting to the other side of the Island so they decided to only drive it at low tide, and on the way back it got bogged 4 times.

And he lost some live pippies in his dad's Paj and is now wondering how to get the smell out.

G’day Porl,

I would call that minimal damage, dad would be pleased. BUT I reckon there is more to come, call it intuition, like why is the clutch slipping or why is there a strange noise in the front diff. Oh – I don’t know, no it wasn’t me that left the hubs locked (don’t know if they have manual hubs – but ya get the drift).

Hope he finds those pipies or the old man makes him scrub it till it smells like roses. That’s all part of the 4wd pleasure he shouldn’t miss out on.

Kind regards

I didn't quiz him too much on the fridge - not sure exactly how it was set up. But he said 'the light thingy would go on and then go off and it wouldn't work". He at least had the sense to try swapping battery connections, though I dunno if he has ever heard of "polarity".

The engel if it is an old model no doubt stoped due to the battereis going low or dropping down past the required amp level to run the engel. The engel in this situation turns itself off so you can still start the car a 60l engel is big ref on two batteries. (I assume one is acranking battery and the other is a heavy duty battery that can also crank the motor) If you plug the engel into 240v power it will probably turn straight on. If it was my stuff i would hit the roof, i cant imagine a crv on moreton but good on him for trying.

Yep....everyone has to learn, but you'd hope that such people could learn a bit faster than that (and before they go - and with their own gear). It is testament though to the level of skills, knowledge and experience that successful bush campers possess.... it doesn't just happen by itself !

Can you please identify your mate so that if he ever wants to borrow stuff from any of us, we can be forewarned and say no.

Hey! We all have to learn. I've been driving on sand for more than 40 yrs and can honestly say that the only people who've never been bogged in sand haven't driven much in sand. Still LOL
