Common sense tells me not to sleep in dunes that are popular as 4WD destinations.... but obviously the same thought never made it into these peoples' heads.

Sleeping backpacker run over
From: AAP

December 19, 2005

A BRITISH man has been run over by a four-wheel drive while sleeping in sand dunes on Queensland's Fraser Island.
A British woman also received minor injuries but was treated at the scene.

The 25-year-old man was among a group of British and German backpackers sleeping in the dunes at Eli Creek on the island, off the coast of Hervey Bay, when the accident happened about 6.50am (AEST) today.

He was flown to Hervey Bay Hospital suffering a suspected broken arm, fractured ribs and cuts to his head, police said.

His injuries are not considered life threatening.

Police said no charges would be laid against the driver.

An Energex community rescue helicopter spokeswoman said it was believed the group had spent the night at the spot, popular with four-wheel drive enthusiasts.

Meanwhile, a 28-year-old Irish tourist has drowned in a hotel swimming pool on the Gold Coast.

He drowned about 4.30pm (AEST) yesterday at Copacabana Apartments in Surfers Paradise.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

Yeah dumbness is a well known desease, spreads like wildfire. We are talking about tourists in a foriegn country ( backpakers or not). Was the area signposted to the effect that it was a throughfare for 4x4 vehicles, were the backpakers told about the area, were they able to understand basic English, I'm not talkin' about the pommies.
Yeah I feel sorry for all those involved!

yeah , you'd hate the beach at the far end of magnetic island , nuthin but backpackers, but not the smelly type, more the semi nude type if you know what i mean :-))))

oh and one of the bays is a nudie beach, but its an hour and a half trek through the scrub.

LMAO... quite a few years ago, somewhere around Happy Valley, we stopped to pick up 2 backpackers that were walking on the beach and thumbing for a ride. One male and one female. We only stopped because she was a dead set stunner... Swedish of course, as it turned out. We were in a Hilux ute and let them get in the back. The real disapointment came when we were helping them into the back, we noticed how badly they both stank.. I mean really really on the nose.. was very difficult to look at this fantastic looking young woman and then cop a whiff of some seriously offensive PONG!!! I'm glad it was a ute.

Most encounters I've had with the Euro trippers up there has been pretty woeful. When they are driving, they are best to avoid, but once in camp, it they can be a bit of fun, if you come across a good group.

This accident is hardly a suprise and I'm just glad it was not fatal as it so easily could have been. They are often there own worst enemies.

They probably read about our recent High Court decision.
Better money than fruit picking?

Driver had come from a track at the back of the dunes.

Backpackers had thought they had set them selves up to be visible from the beach.

Soft sand so the vehicle would had a little speed up to get through it.

Fraser is not the same since it has been 'discovered'.

But you can have a laugh watching the BPs getting through some of the soft tracks.
At least they are willing to have a go. And they learn quick. Show them the difference tyre pessures make and they are right and not so much of a hazard.
