New Kia add - disgraceful

Saw on the weekend a add for the new Kia Rio.
Was disgusted to see that one of the "action" shots was of the Rio driving along a beach and through the waves.
With all the problems there are with people trying to take cars and even small 4WD's on the beach and getting stuck, why do these companies still advertise their cars in situations which are dangerous and downright thoughtless?

Indeed - its tantamount to fraud - what they do in the ads at times and what the caution you about in the owner's manual seems a conspiracy at least. I stumbled across some motoring review on one channel or another the other day - from the UK I think - they were playing with some very expensive motorised toys and the accompanying adverts featured them mostly flogging along through the bl&*%$#@ ocean ! Buyers should be told about this mistreatment ! In SA, far as I know, any car that has been submerged in salt water has to be written off - if its bad for them, why even drive them in the shallow surf ?

Yep It's disgracefull,

The other day I went to the casino expecting it to be full of young, sexy girls, wearing next to nothing and having heaps of fun. Instead all I got was a bunch of puffy faced, red eyed, hunched over, overweight, old blokes sipping on cheap beer. I was cheated. :)

I found the exactly same thing when I bought a packet of tampons after watching the adds. They didn't make young girls want to frolic with me in the shallows at the beach at all. Ripped off.

They tasted terrible too.

You guys must have bought lemons. Since I've been using Lynx deodorant and driving a Ford XR8 ute the sheilas are just flocking to me . . . . and since using the appropriate tampons I can swim, ride hoses and play tennis so much better than I could previously.

If you havent realised in the last 15 years, selling cars is all about image, nothing about capabilities, or what the car actually is. Look at the Xtrail ads.

Watching optus the other day, they had 40yrs of holden, then 40yrs of ford (or something like that).. Watching some of the early days commercials, they actually showed what accessories, motor and drivelines the car had.. Nothing to do with image!

What about the X- Trail adds, I have one and it does all it says and more, most in my club are amazed at the X-Trail capabilities, no low range but driver skills make the difference.

If you watch the Xtrail ads, they are going at good speed down a dirt/sandy track, which you could get a Rolls along at that speed. Wind in the hair, surfboards in the back - ALL ABOUT IMAGE.

We used to drive a HT holden out to Boat Harbour, and all around the 100's of acres of sand dunes out there for years.. Same image they are selling, which cost us $0

How do you go sanding the scratches out of the plastic front guards?

OK I can dig the image thing but what about the guy with the bar of soap in the glovebox on the not so long ago Patrol add. I feel dirty because I don't carry one in my glove box!

Kind regards

My G/F drives a Kia Rio. Great car for the money. She won't let me take it off road though. Reckons I get into enough trouble with the patrol.

"why do these companies still advertise their cars in situations which are dangerous and downright thoughtless?"........because it sells a sh#tload of them, that's why!

The thing with advertising, is that its job is selling an idealised glossy image to the majority of potential purchasers. If the footage looks pretty and the 'dream is kept alive' they've done what they're paid to do and Kia consider their $300,000 for 30 seconds of marketing money well spent. I don't think the Kia Rio will be targeted at the hard core 4x4 demographic and I'm certain bugger all will see any more than a gravel track. Ford utes don't really attract supermodels and Listerine doesn't really clean the bottom of your Bertram either.

The fact of the matter is, we are talking about the new Kia Rio and if it makes the papers, that is the kind of exposure that would cost millions.

I'm not saying it's right or responsible, but it's nothing new. If you want the facts, go for a test drive and buy a workshop manual.

BTW, I was hired to do the driving on the Kia Sorento ad a while back. They are a surprisingly capable off roader for what they are.

One day, when I have nothing better to do, I'd like to write to some of these manufacturers and get them to confirm whether I would be covered by their warranty if I were to buy their vehicle and drive it as shown in their advertisement.

Yeah, I think I do. Then the next question would be "and so why do you think that your ads aren't misleading or deceptive conduct in breach of the Trade Practices Act?"

How about the new pathfinder ad, things got its wheels in the air more often than not. Love to see this ad without the nice music, here the thing screaming and bashing itself to bits.
