Re: the manual boxes in 100 / 105 series Cruisers.

There are 2 manual boxes from what I understand - the R151 which is the smaller Prado box that is slotted in behind the N/A 4.2 1HZJ oiler and the heavier duty H151 box which sits behind the 4.2TD, 1FZ-FE 4.5 six cylinder petrol and 1UZ (?) V8 petrol.

The larger H151 also did stirling service in the old 80 series I believe.

I have never had one fail on me and neither do I actually know anyone who has. My advice is to speak to as many reputable specialist repairers about them as you can and get real life feedback on them. I'd also talk to the hire companies workshops. They must rent out 1,000's of the 1HZJ 105 Landcruisers a week which they get mercilessly caned for their entire life. If they're gonna break, that's where it will happen. "Don't be gentle....it's a rental!"

The internet is full of horror stories that can ruin your next trip with fear if you let it. Take it all with a pinch of salt and carefully form your own opinions. Remember, ANY vehicle will go bang if driven stupidly.

The other option is to buy a live-axle petrol model. They seem to be the only recent models in either Landcruiser or Patrol that don't have engine / drivetrain issues with something or other. (note - 'live axle')

second this....the only 100 to have gearbox problems is the 1hz powered and usually with turbo added aswell as other weighty accessories.....The prado r151 shifts better than the h151 but the h151 is bulletproof almost.
Biggest problem with the 100 is front suspension and front diff.

Is it possible to fit a h151 to the n/a 4.2?

Nick, I don't know about the H151 replacing the R151. If no-one can answer your question here over the next few days I'd post it on one of the more competition based forums like Outerlimits. Lots of the members there are heavily into engine / drivetrain swaps and performance upgrades so they should be able to help.

I'd also get onto the LCOOL 100 series site and post the question. There's a lot of good info to be gained from those folks.

The live axle 105 won't have the IFS suspension issues and the front diff centre can be toughed up if you feel you need to with a bit of work.

Yes, it is possible....i know of a guy running an 80 series turbo diesel in his 105 gxl, using the box and transfer from the 80....probably the easiest way to convert would be to get a 100 series transfer from a petrol or t/d and an 80 1hz box...they all bolt together...whilst at the wreckers, get the tailshafts and crossmenber for the 100 aswell.

Got a member of the local 4wd club that has replaced/repaired the gearbox in his 1HZ GXL 100 twice now, owned it since new, does tow a camper and a few kids as well so reasonable load. Mostly urban running though, stay out of 5th when towing except downhill and easy flat running without a load.

Nick,

I second what peter has said here. I had to rebuild the box on my N/A 4.2 100 series twice in 130000km (it earnt it's keep though with me). Stay out of 5th and for most normal people this car should last a long time. They are great offroad if you can get rid of the spare under the back, as it can get in the road often. Otherwise top truck in my opinion. I feel this speaks volumes as I now drive the opposition Nissan.

Regards Trevor.

Seems strange that you both had to have the boxes done twice. Was it done under warranty by Toyota, full rebuild or just a patch up.

Nick,

I can't talk on peter's behalf, but in my situation both rebuilds were warranty jobs. First time it was a full rebuild, second time I seem to recall it was just a patch up with 5th gear but I sold it when I heard the same 5th gear noises making me (and a gearbox repairer) feel another strip down and rebuild was on the cards. Some of my trouble was definately misinformed people telling me 5th was fine to tow with as long as the revs were right, they were wrong and I am now wiser for the experience (and poorer mind you).
Otherwise it was a beautiful vehicle to drive, I only had it 18 mths but was in it enough to clock up 130000km so it neede to be comfy.
Hope this helps in your decision making.
Cheers Trevor.

Roachie,

Once bitten twice shy. Absolutely NO towing in 5th with the patrol even when I've only got the garden trailer with a tonne in it. Heard way too many bad stories even in the patrols, my uncle was told and paid the consequence for towing in his 2001GU.

Cheers mate Trevor.

Perhaps you blokes might be able to enlighten me alittle more
What actually fails in these boxes?
Ijust traded a 3.0td patrol with a dodgy engine on a GXL4.2 100 series 11/2002 model 70000 ks
Haven't even picked it up yet,now I read this !!!!
Not out of the frying pan into the fire I hope?

Im still buying mine(Tuesday),when you think of all the Cruisers out there, you only here of a select few who have dramas.
Im not sure what fails,I thought it was only 5th gear(towing in it)but read above that one did all bar 4th gear(was noisy anyway).
You also have to watch the front diff,no reverse snatches with it.It has a high pinion and reverse cut gears which means in reverse the pinion has a tendancy to ride high on the crown wheel and bust teeth.Normal 4wd'ing is fine.

The problem is the input shaft is about the thickness of a finger. No easy fix I'm afraid.

Look at petrol as an option and no, I'm not joking. When is the last time you've heard or read of a problem, any problem at all, with a petrol 105 / 100 Landcruiser 4.5 or 4.7 or the GU Patrol series I, II, III or 4 in either the 4.5l or 4.8l? Do a forum search for petrol problems then do the same for diesels with the endless supply of 3.0l ZD30 engines blowing up, overheating and uncurable 4.2TD Nissans, 1HZJ105 gearboxes, 1HZJ injectors and power steering pumps etc.

This is 2005, not 1985. Many of the diesel arguments just don't stack up like they used to.

Petrol pro's: Cheaper to buy, more reliable, cheaper to maintain, more power, quieter, smoother, the strongest drivetrains fitted as standard for each model.

Petrol cons: Uses more fuel but cheaper per litre, may suffer from water ingress but so do modern fly by wire, electronically injected, airflow sensored diesels. Better torque but I'll still put my petrol Cruiser up against any N/A 4.2D for towing anything you care to mention.

Either way, it don't worry me none, I own both - but it is food for thought.

I have a standard model 100 series 1hz mainly use it to tow a 1.5 ton van its done over 200000 klms and ive never had a problem with it. I also work in the coal power stations were the things are everywhere and have only heard of a couple blowing reverse from being flogged from first to reverse when bogged its like most things dont abuse them, service them properly and there fine.
