Happily planning a working holiday in Tassy next summer. Has anybody found any good 4wdriving trips down there? I know much of the bush is protected National Park, but surely there must be more tracks around that aren't advertised on this site, the internet or in books. Will do Montezuma Falls, that's one day, but that leaves me with a lot more time to explore. Maybe the locals don't want to give up any secrets?
Cheers

Hi Barnsey.

Best place to start is with the book "4WD tracks in Tasmania: Off road Tasmania". You can get a copy at the Exploroz Shop. I used it on my trip to Tassie in January of this year, and am happy to recommend it.

This link takes you to the Tas NP site where they have a good listing of the tracks etc.

Barnesy,

If you're planning to tow a camper check out the ferry charge. I did yesterday. A car alone is $59 each way. A car and camper with a combined length of between 11 and 12 metres is $319 each way.

The Govt subsidises cars but not campers.

Cheers,

Jim.

Nick, I woudn't complain, it would be more expensive to get cars there or freight without the subsidies ;-)

It just annoys me that the tourism board complain of low tourist numbers then the TT line whack up the fares. We went over and back on the Spirit in May/June about $650 return(apex fares). Now we are booked to go one way in Feb and its nearly $650(one way).No wonder the tourists stay away.

We were talking to a farmer who bought some rams from us last weekend; he said it heaps cheaper to take a caravan than a commercial trailer like he took last year - because they want the tourists over there. I have also been warned to measure accurately from someone who got it wrong, copped a random spot measuring and had to pay a further $200 (one way).

As soon as we get organised enough to be sure we can make a firm date, i will try & get a booking for during February. (If not, there's always SA, Flinders Ranges, opal country and the rest of Australia for us to see). All these threads on Tasmania have got me keen to go. Still beats me how they can charge more in peak season. I'm sure if we did something like that the ACCC or someone would fine us for profiteering.

Nick, I used to know one of the TT line directors who always hated it when thet had a board meeting on board travelling as he couldn't hold his tucker down. He would probably have to have a good feed when he got this side and fly home again.

MotherH I was hoping to go down to Tassie during the summer for a cool change but there are a few other priorities cropping up. Having to work most of March being one. I guess your farmer friend will take his sheep better provisioned in a caravan in the future? The bar noises may give the game away. Sorry, baa........ (sic)
