Hi all,

An incident yesterday in the work fourby (an ageing and neglected Triton) made it glaringly apparent to management that a new fourby is required for our Dept. When the boss asked me what we should get I replied, "a cruiser of course" to which he laughed heartily! Apparently the budget won't stretch that far. So here's the question...

Any ideas on a vehicle that would have the following preferential features and that could be obtained on a Local Govt budget (read: limited):-
- Turbo Diesel
- Auto (apparently a lot of the female staff only have auto licences. A good reason to get a manual I say!)
- Wagon or Dual Cab (ie 4-5 seats min)
- Beam axles (not so important but preffered)

Basically, the truck would be used on most terrain types (sand, mud, steep terrain etc), not often on anything too tough but the need does arise from time to time. any ideas?

Cheers

Scoey.

Yeah, get the manual, less drivers, as for what type, it doesn't really matter, the bigger and uglier you can get the better,,,, and i dont mean the women... :)-+<

I think your boss should give you a promotion for suggesting a cruiser over a triton. Since no auto is offered in the base models of either cruiser or nissan i would suggest an auto TD Hilux in the SR spec. Good comfort levels easy to drive and heaps of power. I would put on a set of 24570R16 BFG AT tyres and any other after market products you can afford. By the way the mining companies i Weipa (Comalco) use a lot of wowen drivers for their machinery, records show that they are softer on the vehicel trucks dozers etc, which mean longer life and less repair bills. By the way these wowen would clutch start most of us blokes.

Agee, go the Hilux. Pricing on the sr5 is about $11K cheaper and he'll get most of it back when its due for replacement...good for his capex budget....if he has vision of course....and a responsible way to expend ratepayer dollars. Cannot miss!

New Navara might be the go. Better in write-ups than the Hilux.

Yeah I looked at them and they were up around $50k (not quite but close) so prolly out of the question. My first thought was a Jackaroo but apparently they stopped making them?

I would think that a TD auto SR5 Hilux 4x4 would still be out of the price range. How about a Navara crew cab TD auto?

Thanks for the tip. When I originally checked them out I didn't see an Auto option but just looked at the 2006 range and there it is! I'll whack it on the list!

Hi Scoey, Have a look at the Holden Rodeo they are good value and you can get an auto turbo diesel LX, Comes standard with elec windows, twin airbags and CD player. I live in Adelaide and looks like the Gov. dept. are using them here. They are much stronger than the new Hilux, not as much grunt though but enough. I have a LX dual cab.

Hope this helps, Alex.

Will do, currently our two fourby's are the sad ol' triton and a new Courier. Both pretty useless. Not that i consider myself an expert but I'm glad they asked me for input into the new one! They bought a snatch strap to go into the Courier but no shackles! Not that they would've helped a great deal because the courier has only one small tow hook on the front! Homework so far has revealed a potential list...
- Hilux SR TD Auto
- Patrol DX Wagon TD Auto
about to check out the Rodeo.... thanks Alex!

Mate,

I wouldn't discount the 2.5 TD Courier/Bravo.

I've had mine in places others couldn't get to. The motor, box, diffs are well matched and it's gone absolutely anywhere I've pointed it. Done a bit of submarining too :o) (see the recent Wonnangatta River crossing post)

Good low down torque. Plenty of compression braking.

Dunno what the auto's like and I can't see why you wouldn't get a manual even if they do restrict its use by some staff.

The budget & vehicle type you are looking at lend themselves to manuals as it will increase the options. I prefer them off road too, but that's just my preference. Auto's have their advantages in sand/mud but in steep stuff give me a manual any day.

Scoey,

Go the F series. Fit half a football team in and still carry all the essentials as well as the auto option with the little V8 diesel ;-))).
Ohhhh just read the second half of your question... about the budget. Maybe sell the other 3 vehicles and put a downpayment on the EFFIE.

Cheers Trevor.

Get an all terrain 4wd quad bike ( or should that be a "quike"). We have a 4wd Yamaha Grizzly - mind you since they changed the colour scheme to a bright purple/blue that don't look half as macho. The don't have gears. If you need to transport stuff, they pull a small trailer well.

Downside - the girls love riding them. And they run on petrol not diesel.
