Saw the add on the telly! 2.5l CR diesel @ 128kw. So what do the doomsayers have to say about this engine? It's smaller and puts out more power than the 3.0l patrol engine!

Hmm, from my way of thinking they can only get more power out of a smaller engine by better technology and better engine management. I tow a 20ft van with my 3ltr Navara and it handles it OK but its still a lot to expect from a engine that size. Think next changeover will be a 4ltr Patrol Im not convinced that an engine that size could handle heavy towing in the long term.

I would wait untill they come out, take one for a ride, let others buy them fist and see for your self. I heard that Nissan are now owned by Reno and that they are being made in Spain to begin with and then Tailand. By the way the current Navar will still be offered by Nissan when the new one comes out so you may find the current shape has a major price reduction when the new model comes out. Just be patient.

Renault bought out the controlling share in Nissan a good few years back when Nissan was in financial difficulty, and are responsible for the vehicles we have today

Each to his own TRUCKSTER.

I think my Nav is the ducks nuts, but thats just MY opinion, but I figure it tows my boat, tows my van,(mrs has pajero too, for full on van n boat trips) launches my boat, goes anywhere, and runs better fuel economy than a two sedans I've had, thats pretty good in my book, and I enjoy it greatly......I'll just say that again ...I enjoy it greatly... which is all that matters to me.

Yes there are the patrol issues you refer to, but in the whole Nissan has come to the party on most of these. Each manufacturer has their own issues, look at Toyota gearboxes and diffs, what a joke they are, and not always covered.....I know a guy who is Toyota thru n thru, but he'll still tell you the boxes are weakest link..(awaiting hatemail..LOL)

As I say, each to his own......so what do you drive then thats so great?

What you need to understand is that Common rail diesel engine, produce more /torque and use less fuel. However they do require a decent standard of diesel fuel.

CRD engine have been in Australia for at least five years, all are reseanably small in cubic capacity, but can they pull.

The engine in the Pathfinder and Navara, are same. However they have nothing in common with the 3 litre Patrol engine, which if memory serves me correctly comes out of France.

Col, you may ne right about the 2.5 having nothing in common with the 3.0Di but numerous Nissan/Renault sources say the 3.0Di is supplied to Renault in Europe for use in commercials by Nissan Japan. In fact it is one of the few things that Nissan supplies under their technology sharing agreement, which is mostly the other way. It may be the 2.5 comes out of Europe? Someone should check that out.

I don't understand why people feel that these smaller diesel engines are being overly stressed when producing 400Nm plus of torque. I was reading the other day about the new engine in the latest model Volvo FH16 truck - 16 litres and producing 2800Nm of torque. That's 175Nm per litre of displacement. This engine would be expected to last around a million kilometres.

The new Navara is specced at 403Nm for 2.5 litres, or 161.2 Nm/litre. Why would this engine be stressed any more than the truck engine?

Maybe I am just naive.

Due to pick up a new Navara D40 2.5 diesel on Weds - to tow a 2,000 kgs van. I think all the scare tactics about smaller engines to be mostly cr*p. The older large capacity engines rely on old unrefined technolgy and crude finishing. latest engines are specifically desigend for the task they are built for, the engine and components are higher qulaity and built to higher specs.
Wake up guys and accept techological advancement that measn that the petrol guzzlers of old are equivalent to a prehistoric monster!!

there's no replacement for displacement.

I drove two F250s today a 5.4 and a 7.3TD - AWESOME to drive, plenty of power - crew cab 5.4 even spun both back wheels planting the throttle at the lights and hammering it past everyone. I thought 3 tonnes would slow it down more. Waiting to drive the new Nav, but the Pathy with those engines go ok. Problem with these new tiny CRDs is they produce ok torque figures on paper, but what it doesnt show you, how unusable that torque is, its very peaky, unlike the flatter torque curves on the old "dinosaur" motors. They need to release a a larger CRD for the Navaras and Hiluxes specifically for more performance and towing 3 tonnes more effortlessly
