Howdy, the power steering in my HJ75 is not up to scratch. The fluid is fine, the belt is in good condition and correctly tensioned and revs do not make a difference.

Tyres are 15 x 12.5, rims are 15 x 8.

It works sort of OK, but does not have enough grunt to turn the wheels when stationary. This makes low speed manouvering difficult.

Any ideas?

V8Diesel,
When the P/S stuffed up on my HJ75 (leaking fluid) i bought an aftermarket exchange one for roughly 60 oxfords 3 to 4 years ago now. My tyres are roughly the same as yours. Maybe yours is stuffed internally. Just a thought.
Cheers,
Bros.

What did you replace - the pump or the box?

Cheers

V8Diesel,
I replaced the pump unit that runs off the fan belt.
Cheers,

Currently going through this exact problem on my 60 series Cruiser.

Found last week that my car will only turn half a steering wheel rotation either way before the steering gets very hard. While moving it will turn further but with more effort required than previously.

Early in the week I fitted a new pump that fixed all problems, and I can now turn wheel lock to lock while sitting stationary and idling (I have 33" tyres on my Cruiser)

I say currently going through this problem because I had to return the pump and am waiting for a new one. Rather than fit a recoed Toyota pump, I have been recommended to fit an adapted Ford pump because parts are easier to get. The one I was given early in the week worked fine but had the wrong size spacers fitted that meant it put the pump at a angle to my water pump - new spacers are being put in and should be ready tomorrow.

Cheers,

Tom.

Thanks Tom, that seals it. New pump it is!

My 75's been through 20 years of hell, can't complain really.
