New MT/R tyres

Wrecked another tyre on the weekend. This time it was on the bitumen, coming back from beach fishing on the foot of Yorke Peninsula. It was a Toya Opat tyre, which had done 40,000 tough Km; about 30 to 40 % tread left. This tyre had had numerous punctures, so it was one of the 4 tyres on Shirl that was running a tube.

So I found that I have 4 different brands & patterns on the 5 tyres on the Patrol. But at least they are all same size, and approx same tread left.

This meant that I had to consider bringing the Easter 2006 tyre budget forward to 13 days before Xmas 2005.

Had been considering my choices for some time - plenty of research done on the net, asking mates, etc. Settled on either Goodyear MT/R or the new Cooper STT.

Thus, I purchased 4 x MT/R's at a really good price yesterday. It paid me to borrow the $'s now, pay the interest & still be way in front (by about $27 per tyre).

The tyres are already stored at home, under a tarp, while the last 5 of the old tyres are run out, or until I go bush again seriously, next Easter.

Goodyear Hampstead Gardens - Andrew - was the supplier. Get onto him, he runs his own business & knows how to look after people.

Cheers

Surprised you have got that far on the Toyos. i had to take mine off they were so bad. Couldnt go anywhere without tread blocks tearing, sidewalls ripped out and punctures

Yeah Davoe, lotsa punctures & a few sidewalls with sticks through them. The tyre blocks are OK, but generally I am disappointed as they cost the same as these new MT/R's. Initially I thought they were fine, nice uporight sidewall, 10 ply. The Opats went OK on blacktop & sand, dirt was OK as well. But they did not make it in the tough gibber country & northern Flinders Ranges rocks.

On another matter, I went to Berry Bay & Gleesons Landing fishing on the weekend. You recall them, at the foot of Yorke Peninsula, south of Corny Point? There was a recent thread about that region I think you responded to ?

Lovely weather, great location. Got a few mullett, salmon trout, stingrays & one mulloway.

Sure beats staying at home watching grass grow.

My replacement Opat cost $220 and the quote i got for MTR were 330 i know I want em but that is big cash for 4 I am using rags at the moment but want some decent allrounders for my months holiday coming up.
Dont recall going to berry bay but i have been to gleesons landing. Nice beach if you head south as far as you can. Also there was some good rock fishing along the rocks between Gleesons and Daly head. Most of my fishing was done at the southern wnd of the Dushole beach

Thanks Phil, for the recommendation.

I'd like to think that if you listen carefully to qualified advice, you can suss best value/performance.

That's not always the popular product or service, though.

when I worked for South Pacific Tyres they cured your tyres for you. A number of years back they had so many tyres in the warehouse curing.........or maybe they were just over stocked!

The point about buying tyres now is that when there is a good price/special ya gotta be prepared to move. No good complaining that tyre are expensive if ya not prepared to act when they are relatively cheap.

There was a bonus fuel card of $ 75 as well. That was utilised within 1/2 an hour to fill Shirl. I effectively paid $ 255 for each tyre. I haven't heard or seen anything like that in years on these tyres or simialr brands/specs. Best other local prices were $ 289 & $ 330. So I thought I'd pass this info on so others may benefit.

The tyres will only be stored for 3 months. Running on blacktop & Robe sandhills 'till then , so crappy oldies will do. Then whichever carcasses are OK will be the 2nd & 3rd spares etc.

Thats odd- All the goodyear shops I went to here in WA were much more expensive and said their cost price was higher than retail prices I was quoted. Must just be a WA thing where you sell your own brand at higher prices than competitors sell them for.

With the opats- Take the opportunity to smoke up some tyres while you can!
I know it almost brings on tears now when I see smoke coming off my MT/Rs. $$$

Yeah I smoked an MTR up the other week up in the hills, went through a quite insain little gully trying out the new suspension and almost got myself into the crapper as it was a bit more of a challange than I first thought, ended up giving here some major curry and we cralwed out smashing side steps and getting the back wheel off the ground (quite a feet with the new ranchos). When we got out, I smelled something funny and got out of the car and looked back. There was SMOKE EVERYWHERE! My heart started to flutter and the smell was not a normal tyre rubber smell. Upon a closer inspection there was a big flat tree root growing through the bottom of the obstical and the tyres had done a huge burn out along it! Everything is ok and the tyres looks good as new, but it was a bit of a laugh, couldn't see anything thorugh the smoke!

hi all
I believe you are all tryining for a softer ride by reducing your tyre pressure this pratice punctures or stackes the higher you have the presures of the tyress wil give you less punctures

That depends on the terrain and how much you deflate the tyres, snailbait. I have not had a tyre failure since I finally listened to reason and let my tyres down off the bitumen. This argument has been going on for ages, and it seems to me that commonsense and evidence mostly give way to a trance-like holding on to something Dad once said when he used rag ply skinny tyres on the Dodge.

Snailbait, when you inflate your next party balloons, try inflating one very soft, another normal, and another very high.

Then take a pin and prod each balloon to see which one pops most easily.

The really high pressure one will burst first, the normal one second, and the low one third.

Then apply this logic to tyres.

Hi Snailbait,
The low pressure thing is pretty well accepted now by most people for most conditions (except some tyre sellers who love to see busted tyres).

Every club trip I've done on the past 6 years have been done on low pressures, and punctures are almost non-existant.

Cheers

Yep, I'll second that too!!

You might find the price descrepancy between dealers and non dealers in the warranty. I'm not sure if the non goodyear dealers to the free blancing every 10k and free pucture and sidewall repairs? If not, that could explain the diff.

I've just ordered a set of 4.11 diff pinions for the Patrol from Adelaide and once they're installed I'll be buying 4 new 285/75R16 MT/Rs. The 265/75s that I've been using for the last 17,000klm are great; the best tyres I've ever had I'd have to say.
Also waiting for the new 48% transfer case reduction gears from Marks Adaptors which will go in as well.
