Almost a disaster but the GQ survives!

I had a senior moment today.

I was in Pt Pirie doing stuff and amongst things had to try and match up a water temp sender unit with the one I already have. Took the sender out of the block and at the same time loosened the radiator cap to relieve pressure so that not too much coolant was lost. Plugged the hole up with a hanky and biro and went in to the auto parts place.

After being helped with some other parts I returned to the truck, refitted the sender unit, forgot about the radiator cap, closed the engine hood and went about my other business.

In the heat of the day I sped home at 110kmh and going throught the hills between Crystal Brook and Gladstone I had a Prado tailing me. Noticed that the Prado was looking dull and soon realised that the GQ was billowing smoke.

I pulled over at the top of the hill and the engine cut out. Temp was showing 125 plus. Yep, no radiator cap and bone dry radiator. I gave it half an hour to cool off and then filled the radiator with water very gradually...only a little bit at a time. Cranked the engine but just got a slow grinding noise sounding like chug chug. Eventually topped up the radiator again after an hour and she started sweetly. Whew!!! Took it easy into Gladstone and bought a new radiator cap there.

Temperature returned to normal and the engine does not seem any worse for wear. Not engine water loss when I got home so head seems to be OK and oil is clean so hopefully no gasket damage and no power loss when accellerating

Close call!!!!

Hi Willem,
Fingers crossed, hope nothing bad comes of it up the road,.. I'd change the oil after C482 it like that. looking at your thumbnail pic you could near on turn it up side down and it would still look the part, of distant sandscape!..All the Best.

Know the feeling, but mine was a Junior moment.
Bought a FJ 40 'Yota when I was 20 y.o.
Left Keith without putting rad cap back on.
Warped head by the time I reached Adelaide.
The 'Yota dealer would not accept that they left the cap off,,,,,,,,,,they said it was me .................................probably was.

Cheers for Xmas...................hic!

Hi Willem,

Very lucky on your part, or though I would not call it a "senior moment" as I am sure many have done it before. Maybe a good time to give the radiator a good flush then refill with the recommended coolant.

Cheers and Merry Xmas to Jude, Grandma and yourself.

Glenn

I hope it all works out OK for the motor.

Willen Hi

As they say you can't help bad luck and bad luck won't help you

are you going to take the temp sender back and claim warranty?

Didn't seem to work that good

Anyway hope it's all works out OK (that is no ring damage, no piston seizure, let alone gaskets or head damage)

I know people will say that if no water (coolant) on temp for the sender to read "BUT"

Merry Xmas

Richard

I wont put my last name just in case I cause a rioted

Hey Willie,
When you have the top hose off for it's sugery (cut and shut), maybe you should also look into adding (like I have recently done) a Low Water Alarm EngineSaver.
Cheers

Willem,

Your quote "Cranked the engine but just got a slow grinding noise sounding like chug chug"

I'd be very suspicious of that noise. The overheating could have caused a minor seizure of the bores 'n piston(s).

Being a TD42 engine, it'll stand a lot of abuse and you've probably gotten away with it. But keep an eye on poor starting from cold and fuel smoke out the exhaust over the next few months.

Hate to spoil your party.

Hey Willem

Bit lucky with the old 4.2. Hope it holds.

I wouldn't worry about the "seniors moment" too much especially if it is a one off.

My Dad had a regular one. If he was parking the car somewhere a bit dodgy he would take out the rotor button and drop it in his pocket. They won't nick it now he'd say.

Many times we have returned to the car....."Hey Dad" says I "Shouldn't you..." "Not now son" he interupts "time to get home. Now why won't this thing start?"

You still heading this way?
Merry Christmas anyhow.
